Sony Cleans Up With New Oxford Restoration Tools

"DeClick," "DeBuzz," and "DeNoise" plug-ins provide extra flexibility (January 20, 2005)

Sony is expanding its line of Oxford plug-ins with the introduction of the Oxford Restoration Tools Suite. This newest offering bundles three powerful software tools to provide increased audio restoration flexibility, even when correcting severely damaged tracks, while still retaining all the original characteristics and brightness of the original recordings.

"The early Oxford Plug-Ins?EQ, Dynamic, Inflator, and the more recent Transient Modulator (TransMod) and Reverb?were immediately embraced by recording engineers, producers and artists," said Paul Foschino, senior manager for professional audio in Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Production Systems Division. "As our industry continues to grow more reliant on software applications, the Oxford Restoration Tools are certain to become a valuable asset for both recording engineers and even forensic sound restoration professionals."

The basic parameter settings of the Oxford Restoration Tools need few changes to achieve excellent results, however users can also take advantage of manual options that are available for situations that require more hands-on control. The Restoration Tools Suite includes fast, high-quality solutions for three distinct audio restoration issues:

* DeBuzz, which offers both "strong" and "weak" modes, to minimize signal damage and automatically track any slow drift of the fundamental "buzz" frequency;

* DeNoise, which precisely tracks noise in auto mode. It can provide traditional Noise Fingerprint capture and includes a "Mid-Side" button for "de-noising" FM broadcasts, and a "Soft" control for reducing artifacts while working with heavy noise; and

* DeClick, which represents a particularly significant technological advance by combining the functions of click and pop removal. Unlike other "de-clickers," it is capable of removing large pops and clicks, as well as barely perceptible but still bothersome crackles.

The Sony Oxford Restoration Tools Suite is available for Digidesign ProTools systems as RTAS/Audiosuite plug-ins for both Macintosh OSX and Windows XP at a suggested list price of $1,195.
