Sonnet Releases 500 MHz to 1 GHz Upgrades

Sonnet Technologies has launched a number of new Macintosh hardware upgrades today, as well as a new ATA133 host adapter. The upgrades include a G4 processor upgrade for PowerBook Wallstreet models, a G3 upgrade for the Power Mac 7200 and a G4 800 MHz and 1 GHz option for Sawtooth models. The company has also announced the new Tempo HD, an expansion bay option for internal hard drives.

The new Tempo ATA133 PCI host adapter is designed to be compatible with hard drives in nearly all PCI-based Macintosh computers, including pre-G3 models, and works not only with hard disks, but also DVD and CD-R drives. Included with the controller is the Tempo AV tool, which provides enhanced audio and video playback on older Macintosh models. It's available now for $99.95.

Sonnet has also launched Tempo HD, a 2.5-inch hard drive attached directly to an ATA133 controller. t supports the same models as the Tempo ATA133 and runs $219.95 to $319.95 for models with drives ranging in capacity from 20 GB to 40 GB.

In terms of upgrades, Sonnet has announced 800 MHz and 1 GHz Encore/ST G4 upgrades for graphite Sawtooth G4s. They use Motorola's 7455 line of G4 chips and include 2 MB of DDR backside cache. It supports all graphite G4s and automatically detects the bus speed of the model to optimize performance. It also supports the G4 Cube but requires custom installation. The new Encore/ST upgrades will be available in August for $499.95 for the 800 MHz version and $699.95 for the 1 GHz version. The Cube installation kit runs $29.95.

For Wallstreet PowerBook models, Sonnet has launched a 500 MHz G4 upgrade. It includes a 500 MHz G4 processor and 1 MB backside cache. It supports a total RAM capacity of 512 MB and works with all Wallstreet hardware and software, as well as Mac OS X. t's available now for $399.95.

Finally, Sonnet has also announced a new upgrade for the Power Mac 7200. It's a 500 MHz G3 and supports Mac OS 7.5.3 through 9.1. It's available now for $269.95.
