Sonic Solutions Integrates Ligos GoMotion MPEG Encoding Into MyDVD

(August 27, 2001)
Ligos Corporation announced that Sonic Solutions has incorporated Ligos' MPEG encoding technology into its new MyDVD 3 application for consumer DVD recording and authoring. As part of a broad technology licensing relationship, Sonic is integrating Ligos' GoMotion video compression directly into MyDVD, providing users an end-to-end, out of the box solution for authoring DVDs from any video source.

With the integration of the GoMotion encoder, users are able to connect their IEEE 1394-enabled DV camcorder directly to MyDVD and create the high-quality MPEG-2 required for DVD projects with unprecedented speed and simplicity.

GoMotion was first introduced in 1998, and has since become the most popular MPEG-2 software encoding solution for the PC. The GoMotion software development kits (SDKs) provide application developers the ability to incrementally add MPEG functionality to Windows-based digital media applications on an as-needed basis. Ligos' unique approach to motion estimation allows the GoMotion codec to provide highest-quality encoding at real-time performance, at high or low bit rates. Each SDK is built on the same GoMotion codec core, but optimized for specific applications. SDKs currently available include:

  • GoMotion.MPG -- Provides high-quality, real-time MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding and non real-time transcoding.

  • GoMotion.DV -- Provides enhanced functionality needed to efficiently capture DV content from IEEE-1394 enabled camcorders, and convert it directly to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.

  • GoMotion.DVR -- Optimized for reliable, long-term, real-time MPEG encoding from an analog video source, enabling developers to create software-based digital video recording applications.

  • GoMotion.Play -- For developers in need of a fast, flexible solution for decoding MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 streams.
