Sonic Foundry Introduces New Rich Media Recorders

Mediasite systems speed and expand enterprise communications (June 09, 2004)

Sonic Foundry Inc., a leading rich media solutions company, today introduced a new family of rich media recorders developed as part of the company's Mediasite line. The products, unveiled at InfoComm 2004, enable enterprise customers to effortlessly record and distribute rich media content needed for effective corporate communications, Web-based education, online training, product marketing and related applications.

The new AV-ready products build on the company's exclusive real-time rich media technology first introduced three years ago. By automating all of the complex processes typically associated with creating high-quality rich media content, Mediasite is changing the way organizations think about and use rich media. The result is an easy, convenient and affordable way to broaden learning opportunities, maximize the sharing and understanding of information, increase communication frequency and improve productivity.

The new rich media recorders announced today easily integrate into meeting and lecture rooms to transparently record everything presented or projected, thereby maximizing existing infrastructure investments. The latest products are:

Mediasite VL400 A true breakthrough design, the Mediasite VL400 is the industry's first multi-channel recorder for video conferencing applications. Available as a rackmount or tabletop system, the Mediasite VL400 instantly captures and synchronizes audio, video as well as all graphics and visuals including annotations presented during two-way video conferences. Conferences also can be recorded and burned to a CD for offline viewing, or streamed via the Web for live and on-demand desktop access.

Mediasite RL400 The Mediasite RL400 is the newest advancement of Sonic Foundry's award-winning Web presentation system, previously known as Mediasite Live. True to its heritage, Mediasite RL400's unique dual-channel, real-time processing eliminates all the complicated and time-consuming authoring or post-production requirements of competing products, and delivers the unmatched speed and versatility people have come to expect from Sonic Foundry technology.

The new rack-mountable Mediasite RL400 is designed as a stand-alone presentation recorder that allows customers to capture presentations without the need for backend server connection. It comes in a sleek, more compact design that facilitates a seamless integration within existing AV environments and provides organizations with additional power and workflow flexibility for automating the set-up, capture and recording processes for rich media Web presentations. A simplified user interface gives presenters one-touch recording capabilities without interfering in their presentation style or content.

"During the past year, we learned that customers want a real-time recorder with enhanced performance and flexibility to time-shift their business and education presentations," said James Dias, vice president of marketing and sales for Sonic Foundry. "They also asked us to better integrate this recording capability into their presentation and video conferencing systems and infrastructure. This emphasis on rapid capture, flexible delivery and AV integration has led us to develop a new family of media devices that further simplify and streamline the use experience and workflow, while also breaking new ground in the video conferencing arena."

Mediasite RL400 features a variety of enhancements to improve functionality, AV integration and the end-user experience.

Key new features and capabilities include:

Control Systems Interoperability A new interface known as the Mediasite Control Interface Protocol (MCIP) gives system designers the ability to integrate Mediasite into their AV solutions by providing instant, touch-panel recording capabilities directly from any podium or lectern. The fixed set of commands can be remotely triggered from a variety of external interfaces, including IP, RS232 and USB.

RapidRecord VCR-like simplicity gives presenters the ability to quickly start and stop recording presentations on-the-fly. Content is instantly available.

Server-free Recording Mode This new class of rich media presentation recorders enables presenters to record and playback rich media presentations without connecting to a server. Content can be burned to CD or USB media or sent to any type of storage server.

VersaVisual Patent-pending technology enables the capture of multi-source, multi-format visual content from a variety of analog and digital sources. Provides high-resolution playback with automatic visual index for navigation to any point in the presentation. Easily handles complex engineering diagrams, maps, photos, detailed medical imagery, intricate drawings and other applications where visual clarity is critical.

Real-time Technology The industry's fastest multi-channel encoding system with compressed workflow delivers a present-to-publish ratio that's second to none. Rich media files are created up to 10 times faster than conventional Web authoring approaches to putting presentations online.

Publish to Flash Offers a simple way to convert Mediasite content for playback as Flash. Mediasite presentations can be integrated into rich applications based on the Flash platform making it compatible with all the popular desktop operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple and Unix and Linux.

Enhanced Security Management New feature allows organizations to easily manage distribution and authorization of their content by providing various levels of user authentication parameters and thresholds for viewing content.

Reporting and Tracking Gives organizations the ability to see who's logged on to view content, what they watched and for how long. Goes beyond IP addresses, to provide usable contact information.

The evolution of the Mediasite product line is the result of customer feedback coupled with Sonic Foundry's 10-year legacy of developing practical, innovative products that fill critical market needs. In the two years since it was first introduced as an integrated standalone system, the Mediasite presentation recorder has quickly set the standard as the premier rich media Web communication system in the industry. Mediasite units currently installed now stand at 234 versus 59 one year ago, nearly a four-fold increase year-to-year. Customers, excluding resellers, now number 110 versus 27 a year ago.

Availability and Pricing:
Mediasite RL400 (MSRP: $21,950) and Mediasite VL400 (MSRP: TBD based on final specifications) can be ordered directly from Sonic Foundry or through its resellers and systems integrators located throughout North America starting in July.
