Sonatype Partners With EdgeCast Networks to Serve Billions of Requests per Year From the World's Largest Repository of Java ComponentsThe Central Repository Moves to the EdgeCast Content Delivery Network -- Software Developers Worldwide to See Faster Response Times From Fault-Tolerant Infrastructure (July 18, 2012)
SILVER SPRING, MD and SANTA MONICA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/18/12 -- Sonatype, the leader in Component Lifecycle Management (CLM) and the operator of the Central Repository, the world's primary repository of open-source software components, today announced it has signed an agreement with EdgeCast Networks to accelerate the delivery and increase the availability of components from the Central Repository.
Under the terms of the agreement, the more than 60,000 development organizations that use the Central Repository to download open-source artifacts for component-based software development will benefit from EdgeCast's high-performance global infrastructure, because components will now be served from the edge server closest to each user. In addition, Sonatype Nexus Pro customers will now have access to end-to-end Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, bringing a greater level of security to their software development processes.
"Leveraging EdgeCast Networks' global delivery platform not only accelerates the distribution of components globally helping improve build performance for all users, but it also adds another layer of geographic fault-tolerance for component distribution," notes Mike Hansen, Head of Engineering for Sonatype. "The Central Repository is the most secure, reliable and high-performing source of open-source components available."
The Central Repository is a free, openly available, cloud-based repository where developers distribute their software to millions of users globally. It has become the industry's primary source for open-source artifacts, housing more than 400,000 components and now servicing more than 7.5 billion requests per year. Popular software development infrastructure products such as Apache Maven, Apache Ant, Gradle, Nexus, Ivy and Eclipse all rely on the Central Repository. In 2011, the JBoss Community and Java.net began using the Central Repository as their primary distribution point for key components.
"Sonatype has always had a firm commitment to ensuring that the Central Repository is a reliable resource for the community with a rock-solid infrastructure," said Jason van Zyl, founder and CTO of Sonatype and the creator of Apache Maven and the Central Repository. "We continue to invest in enhancements to the Central Repository extending its value to the open-source community. EdgeCast's unmatched experience, massive distribution and premium technical features were an ideal fit for supporting the magnitude of the Central Repository -- which is one of the most widely used sites on the Web."
"Component-based software development and the use of the Central Repository by development teams is growing at a remarkable rate," said Anthony Citrano, EdgeCast VP of communications and marketing. "Providing a consistent and reliable user experience -- regardless of end-user location -- is critical to the thousands of organizations that rely on Central for building mission-critical software. We are delighted to help Sonatype accelerate their content delivery and ensure that Central maintains the greatest performance, security, and reliability."
Sonatype is leading the component revolution. The company's innovative component lifecycle management products enable organizations to realize the promise of agile, component-based software development while avoiding security, quality and licensing risks. Sonatype operates the Central Repository, the industry's primary source for open-source components, housing more than 300,000 components and serving more than five billion requests per year from more than 60,000 organizations. The company has been a pioneer in component-based software development since its founding by Jason van Zyl, the creator of the Apache Maven build management system and the Central Repository. Since that time, Sonatype has been a leader in core open source software development ecosystem projects used by more than nine million developers including Nexus, m2eclipse, and Hudson. Sonatype is privately held with investments from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Accel Partners, Bay Partners, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Morgenthaler Ventures.
