SolidWorks' eDrawings 2.0 receives Innovation Award for 2001

Computer Graphics World cites e-mail-based 3D CAD review technology for its ease of use and time-saving features that accelerate time to market (November 08, 2001)
Design engineers have enjoyed technological leaps in three-dimensional computer-aided design (3D CAD) software in the past few years, but many still rely on decades-old technology to collaborate on those designs. Computer Graphics World recognized SolidWorks Corp.'s eDrawings 2.0 e-mail-based 3D CAD technology for incorporating Internet technology to solve this business problem and simplify the design review process. eDrawings 2.0 lets engineers easily send 3D solid models to colleagues so they can review and mark-up the designs in real-time, saving the time and money of using fax, overnight delivery, or "snail mail."

"eDrawings 2.0 solves a widespread problem in the design community," said Phil LoPiccolo, editor-in-chief at Computer Graphics World. "Many designers still share data the old fashioned way. eDrawings 2.0 lets designers compress 2D and 3D CAD files for e-mail delivery. It also embeds a viewer that allows recipients to review CAD models as well as markup, measure, and return them to the sender without having to purchase new software."

These innovations help engineers and designers work more efficiently and speed products to market rather than wasting time on the design review process. As a winner of Computer Graphics World's Eighth Annual Innovation Award, eDrawings 2.0 is one of 20 products the magazine recognized for its impact on visual computing. "Computer Graphics World knows the latest CAD technology and it knows what products actually simplify a design engineer's job," said John McEleney, SolidWorks' chief operating officer. "This award highlights eDrawings' main benefit: streamlining the design review and collaboration processes so companies can get their products to market faster than before."
