SolidWorks Software Gives Iowa State Students a Head Start in Their Engineering and Design CareersEasy-to-learn 3D CAD software helps students quickly gain valuable hands-on engineering experience as they learn to design, test, and build products (October 23, 2001)
"We can teach a novice in one session to design a finished sprocket using SolidWorks software," said Chris Lassen, CAD director for Iowa State's mechanical engineering department. "Competing technologies are more complicated, and usually take at least five sessions before students can create complete designs. Unlike other 3D CAD solutions on the market today, SolidWorks' short learning curve enables students to quickly gain expertise with the technologies they'll use throughout their professional careers."
Iowa State's Mechanical Engineering Department, which will have the largest number of students using the software, will teach students how to design, test, and build machine parts and assemblies from one platform using SolidWorks and its partner applications. Traditionally, engineers would have to jump from a CAD design application to a design testing application to a manufacturing application for production. SolidWorks has integrated its 3D CAD software with testing applications so students can design, test, and build these parts from a single platform.
"The big push here is to make students' time more efficient," said Warren DeVries, the Mechanical Engineering Department's executive officer. "We want students to start thinking about integrated environments for product design. SolidWorks makes our job infinitely easier because we don't have to waste time jumping from one platform to another."
Nearly 70 percent of Iowa State's approximately 1,000 mechanical engineering graduates will take at least one course in SolidWorks, according to DeVries. About 1,725 students in all four departments will have access to SolidWorks' 3D solid modeling technology.
Iowa State uses SolidWorks' partner applications to enhance the 3D CAD experience for its students in all four departments. These applications include Structural Research & Analysis Corp.'s COSMOS/Works to conduct stress analyses and TekSoft CAD/CAM System, Inc.'s CAMWorks to prepare SolidWorks designs for the machining process.
"Iowa State has established an outstanding reputation for equipping its mechanical engineering students with the skills and experience they'll need in their professional careers," said Rosanne Kramer, SolidWorks' director of education markets. "Instead of spending weeks learning how to use complicated tools, students can quickly learn 3D CAD with SolidWorks, and spend more time creating new designs and honing their talents."
Iowa State receives ongoing technical training, support, and service from SolidWorks' reseller Tridaq, Inc.
