SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 4.5Music creation app gets you in the mood for music
As I began the finishing touches on my film “Fiesta Grand” I came to a point where I really needed some music for a few scenes that I didn’t intend to have music. The challenge was I had no more budget for any extra music. My fellow filmmakers pointed me in the direction of a program that just introduced a huge upgrade. I thought I would give it a try; after all, there was a free trial available on their website. Welcome to SmartSound’s Sonicfire Pro 4.5
What is Sonicfire Pro 4.5?
As I visited the website I realized “Hey I saw this booth at NAB!” I remembered that there was a crowd around the booth and it had some cool tunes blasting through the air. Those tunes were coming from SmartSound Sonicfire Pro, a music and scoring software application that runs on both Mac and Windows. This application enables you to quickly create music from hundreds of royalty free assets to fit your content perfectly. I had always stayed away from “looped-based” applications as you really needed to know music to use them, but SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 4.5 made my experience easy.
Sonicfire Pro 4.5 enables you to control up to eight instrument layers which results in making every track unique. Pick the music you like via its Maestro tab and set it on the timeline. Want more bass? Use the easy slider to add or subtract any of the instruments involved. I felt like a real composer in no time (ok I know I’m not but let me daydream). I really was able to make unique sounds. With SmartSound’s Multi Layer Music anything seemed possible.
Sonicfire Pro 4.5 allows you to import video to work from. Simply click on the “Choose Video” tab and import your QuickTime file. Having the video available is great when looking for that perfect sound or score to fit. When you have the Maestro tab selected and you search for music, you can click “Preview with Timeline,” which will sync your video to the music or sounds you are previewing.
Keep it real
Have you ever added music to a project and used volume envelopes to fade the ending if the video and music were not the same length? SmartSound’s Sonicfire Pro 4.5 can deliver your music with real beginnings and endings. Simply slide either side to the time you want and its done. Need it longer? Drag it to the right and Sonicfire Pro 4.5 will compensate and add the extra music right before your eyes (or ears).
|Sonic Mood Mapping|
Get in the mood
The hottest part of Sonicfire Pro, in my opinion, is the “Mood Mapping” feature. Let’s say you have added the perfect music for your clip. After listening to it you decide it would be great if you could lower it so the dialogue could be heard better. Via the new “Mood Mapping” tool I just click “Add Mood” and it marks the spot where I can now change the tempo or mood of the song. Click on Dialog and the song will now drop to allow the dialog to be heard. You can also customize the instruments to really have full power over the song. Want more bass? Drag the slider over. Need more cowbell? Do the same. Pretty awesome stuff.
Need more music?
Sonicfire Pro 4.5 ships with Core Sessions and Core Foundations to get you off and running. When you need more music you can search via Maestro and purchase just the sound or song you want or visit the site and search for deals on full CD’s. Remember its all royalty free. Than means no paperwork hassles. I love it.
Export is a great feature. When you are done with your new score for your trailer, commercial, or movie, click on File > Export Soundtrack. You now have the option to export just the soundtrack, video and soundtrack, or current selection. You can export tracks or segment blocks into separate files. Sonicfire Pro 4.5 exports WAV or AIFF files ranging from 22k for CD-ROM to 96k HD.
Ok here’s the ultra cool feature: Send to. Sonicfire Pro 4.5 allows you to send the completed files to your favorite apps. The list includes:
- Adobe After Effects
- Adobe Premiere
- Final Cut Express
- Final Cut Pro
- Flash 8
- Flash MX2004
- iTunes and iLife
- QuickTime Movie Player
- Soundtrack Pro
After choosing one, the application will open up and the file will be in your project or source area. Nice touch right?

I am extremely pleased with my experience with Sonicfire Pro 4.5 and highly recommend its use. The software was easy to use and master. It will be perfect for my podcasts, trailers, films and more. Make sure you have room on the hard drives for the music as they can be quite large sometimes. The SmartSound library also has a great selection of stingers and sound effects all at affordable prices. This is a quality product and great upgrade for current users too.
