SmartDisk Ships New FireWire Desktop Drives

Cheaper Drives Offer Up to 100 GB Capacity (September 27, 2001)
SmartDisk Corporation announced new versions of its SmartDisk VST FireWire Desktop Drives, featuring increased storage capacities and lower prices.

The new drives will be available in 40, 60, 80 and 100 Gigabyte (GB) capacities, an increase in size from previous versions, which had a maximum capacity of 75 GB. They are designed to store extremely large files, such as those created with digital video authoring software and other multimedia applications. The drives are compatible with all FireWire-equipped Macintosh computers as well as IEEE 1394-equipped Windows-based personal computers.

The new drives also feature hot-plug/unplug support, which means users don't have to shut down or restart their computers to install the drives. To save desk space, the drives can be stacked horizontally or vertically.

Every SmartDisk VST FireWire Desktop Drive ships with VST Format 2.3.1 with Hot Plug Events for Macs, software for drive formatting and partitioning, password control, write protection, encryption (by partition) and more. Hot Plug Events allows users to program a SmartDisk external drive to execute any number of tasks automatically upon plug-in. Examples include performing a backup of a Documents folder, launching a favorite MP3 play list from a music library resident on the drive, or performing an automatic download of e-mail from an Internet mailbox to the drive.

The 40GB drive is priced at $299.95. The 100GB drive is priced at $499.95. Both will ship in October. The 60GB drive ($349.95) and 80GB drive ($449.95) are shipping now.
