SmartDisk Intros 5 GB Hard Drive Capable of Storing/Maintaining DVD Quality Video

(July 18, 2001)
SmartDisk Corporation announced the creation of the world's smallest portable 5GB FireWire hard drive, "FireLite." Developed in cooperation with Toshiba Corporation, the SmartDisk FireLite Super Slim Drive is the only 5GB hard drive capable of handling digital video transfer rates for up to two hours of DVD quality video.

The pager sized drive supports a variety of digital video, audio, data backup and multimedia applications used by consumers and professionals. The SmartDisk FireLite Super Slim Drive rapidly transfers and stores large volumes of music, DVD quality movies, photos and data to and from desktops and laptops. Its small casing - just 2.4" (W) X 4" (D) X .5" (H)- and weight of just five ounces makes it easy to carry in a purse, a briefcase or even a shirt pocket.

With a sleek, silver-colored casing, FireLite is the perfect complement to Apple's new Titanium PowerBook G4 computer and has its own striking appeal. Because the drive is FireWire cable bus-powered, no external power source is necessary even when it's used with a notebook. FireLite also features hot-plug/unplug support, which means users don't have to shut down or restart the computer when they install the drives.

The SmartDisk FireLite 5GB Super Slim Drive is priced at $399.95 MSRP. The SmartDisk FireLite Super Slim Drive is currently available in one capacity but plans are underway to increase that to accommodate a range of digital lifestyle needs. The 5 GB model provides capacities for a variety of digital video, Internet content, audio and multimedia applications.
