Smart AV Introduces Elite Series Smart Console at NAB2005

Operators realize ergonomic improvements with unit?s touch-sensitive arc (April 11, 2005)

Smart AV is presenting its Elite Series Smart Console for the first time at NAB. Designed to meet the complex requirements of mixing large numbers of audio sources in high-pressure situations, the Smart Console provides fivefold improvements in ergonomic efficiency due to a unique touch-sensitive arc that can summon any of up to 96 channels directly to the operators fingertips. This new breed of mixing console control surface also provides broadcasters and post production users a choice of signal processing engine or workstation.

The Smart Console is currently available in 48- and 96-channel configurations with a 72-channel version coming soon. Consoles can be fitted with up to 24 physical channel strips and an optional Post Panel depending on size. Designed purely as a control surface, the Smart Console interfaces via an open Ethernet protocol to a growing number of signal processing and routing devices. The console shown at NAB2005 is interfaced to Apples Logic Pro 7 workstation.

The console also works with Merging Technologys Pyramix and the VADIS System from KLOTZ DIGITAL. Further engine solutions are in the pipeline including the DME64N and DME24N from Yamaha, Series 5 engines from SADiE including the PCM-H64, Steinbergs Nuendo, Mackies HUI, and Peaveys MediaMatrix NION.

In addition to enabling users to configure the console with their processing engine of choice, the Smart Console also allows collections of subsystems to be controlled together. The console can be interfaced with Audients 501 monitoring system, and work is in progress for the Grace Designs m904/m906 and Crockwood monitoring systems, as well as Crockwoods Paint Pot remote mic pres. Interfaces with effects systems are also in development to connect to TC Electronics System 6000 and Kurzweils KSP8. The number of partners is growing rapidly and Smart AV will shortly publish a software development kit to enable third parties to do their own integration.

Smart AVs Elite Series consoles are distributed in North America by ATI. ?The reactions we have been getting from mixers at the demo sessions we have been hosting recently have exceeded our expectations, said Dan Zimbelman, ATIs director of sales. ?This console offers mixers tremendous control by making the entire creative process far simpler and intuitive, and because a system based around it is easily upgraded, it also solves the problem of rapid obsolescence of digital technology. The console offers a great deal in the broadcast, post, music recording, and live sound environments.

How It Works
Central to its operational concept is a physical arc that that spans the console within easy reach of the operator. Fitted with touch sensors, it allows easy and intuitive access to any channel. With a simple touch to the strip, the desired channel and the channels surrounding it immediately appear at the operators fingertips, as though the operator had instantaneously moved in front of those channels on a traditional long console. With this single touch, as many as 800 previously out-of-reach controls are conveniently placed within the operators reach. As a further aid, the handwritten channel descriptions are electronically transferred to the strips in front of the operator. Ergonomic studies reveal that the Smart Console greatly reduces the number of eye movements, physical actions, and time taken to perform a range of typical mix tasks. The mix engineers left brain workload is substantially reduced, cutting stress levels and freeing up the right brain for creative/artistic activity.
