Sideshow Creative Brings Films To Life For iN DEMAND

Movie posters come to life for iN DEMAND?s Barker Channel (October 26, 2004)

Leading full service design company Sideshow Creative is excited to unveil its new package for iN DEMANDs Movies on Demand Barker Channel. A familiar outlet for all Time-Warner Digital Cable customers, the Barker Channel presents ordering information and promos for the movies you can order from Movies on Demand.

The Barker Channel also offers extras such as the ?behind the scenes making of a particular movie, monthly collections of topical or seasonal films, and benefit promos for the service itself.

Working in collaboration with iN DEMAND Sideshow redesigned a new Barker wheel using blocks or modules of genre categories chosen by iN DEMAND. For each module, Sideshow created an opening title sequence and a movie title list background to close it. The genre categories that define each module are: Action, Family, Drama, Comedy, New Releases, Coming Soon, Critics Choice, Collections and Extras.

Sideshow Creative Director Bob English proposed a master concept of movie posters coming to life. Each genre would be introduced by showing a real movie poster as seen from a sidewalk outside a movie house. As the camera pushes closer to, and eventually into the poster, it magically comes to life, revealing a three-dimensional world where the viewer had only imagined a flat surface.

?The goal with this project was to create nine different worlds that were each representative of a specific genre, explains Bob English. ?To keep the styles of the posters varied, we worked with different designers and the challenge they faced was to be representative of the genre without seeing a specific person or hero. In response, our poster designs are treated conceptually using iconic images to enhance the symbolism.

?We wanted a ?retail-like experience for customers where we could bring them in and merchandise our offerings to them, remarks Stacie Gray, VP Executive Creative Director, iN DEMAND Networks. ?Sideshow came up with a really dramatic way to bring viewers into the world of movies and guide them through the great choices they have with Movies On Demand.

Bob English, working with Art Directors Evelyn Lim and John Leamy, created various poster designs from which iN DEMAND chose their favorite for each genre. Senior Visual Effects Artist Jesse Newman built a tool kit for the live-action openings that the design and compositing team used for each genre. The feel of each poster is contemporary Hollywood, underlining the fact that Movies on Demand offers recent hits. The styling, however, varies from photoreal to multi-plane cutouts, silhouettes to 3D, and pop art to dramatic chiaroscuro.

To prepare for the redesign, English shot digital stills of a cinema complex to reference lighting conditions. The people featured in the opens were shot against greenscreen and then dropped into the artificial cinema complex world. ?One of the trickiest parts of this concept was to make the transition from this ?real world into the poster world seamless, comments Jesse Newman. ?There were many technical issues involved such as connecting two camera moves -- from a 3D space into the flat poster that then changed into a 3D environment.

Producer Kurt Teske concludes, ?We really enjoyed working with the team at iN DEMAND. This project was very challenging and our unique solution gave our creative team the chance to express themselves artistically and technically.
