Shrimp season rolls on amid controversy over quotaShrimp processors to seek higher catch quota as Gulf of Maine shrimping season rolls on
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ' New England fishermen have been casting their nets for Gulf of Maine northern shrimp since the season began Jan. 2, but their season could be cut short if their catches are too strong.
Regulators are meeting Thursday in South Portland to assess where the overall harvest stands. If it's too high, they could set a closing date to the season or further restrict fishermen by limiting daily catches or cutting back how often they can go to sea.
Shrimp processors and fishermen are planning to urge regulators to increase this year's quota of 4.4 million pounds, barely a third of last year's catch.
Boats from Maine typically catch nearly 90 percent of the annual northern shrimp harvest, with New Hampshire and Massachusetts boats catching the rest.
