ShoreTel Licenses VidyoTechnologyVidyo: Sole Company Offering Scalable Video Coding (SVC) Architecture; Key to Enhanced Video Conferencing Resiliency and Quality (August 05, 2008)
HACKENSACK, NJ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/05/08 -- Vidyo(TM), Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that ShoreTel is the first unified communications company to bring to market products using VidyoTechnology(TM). The latest release of ShoreTel's award-winning unified communications system, release 8.0, takes advantage of Vidyo's technology utilizing the latest enhancement to the H.264 standard for video compression: Scalable Video Coding (SVC). Vidyo's groundbreaking technology enables ShoreTel to provide high-quality video and network resiliency at an attractive cost to every desktop, including remote workers.
"The integration of Vidyo's breakthrough technology into ShoreTel's unified communications product line, allows us to offer our customers the ability to make simple and natural video calls," said Kevin Gavin, VP of Product Marketing, ShoreTel. "Because of Vidyo's SVC-based architecture, video can be transmitted and received with minimum delay, eliminating distance as an impediment to face-to-face conversations; now it's easier than ever for users across the enterprise to communicate and collaborate effectively."
The Importance of Vidyo's Scalable Video Coding
The new H.264/SVC protocol is a video compression standard that enables a video stream to be broken into multiple resolutions, quality levels and bit rates. Utilizing this capability and Vidyo's intellectual property, VidyoTechnology offers unprecedented error resiliency while eliminating the MCU. The VidyoRouter(TM) is the first video multipoint solution that can deliver rate matching and continuous presence capabilities without an additional video encode and decode. This unique capability allows for half of the end-to-end delay of MCU-based solutions, as well significantly lowers port price. The VidyoRouter can support multiple resolutions and frame rates for every endpoint
"In the past, cost effective high quality video conferencing over general purpose IP networks was not possible because available bandwidth cannot be guaranteed and both processing power and display resolutions at endpoints are variable," said Ofer Shapiro, CEO of Vidyo. "VidyoTechnology allows unified communication vendors to offer better video quality at much lower price points than traditional solutions. We are excited that ShoreTel recognizes the significance of this breakthrough technology."
Vidyo is the first company to offer OEM customers the ability to license H.264/SVC-based technology to use in building their future products. Until now, unified communications companies -- whose focus is to deliver unified communications over IP networks -- have not had the necessary technology to provide high quality video conferencing over non-QOS IP networks in their unified communications solution. VidyoTechnology, the first commercial implementation based on H.264/SVC, radically changes this scenario and offers equipment vendors and solution providers the ability to integrate better point-to-point and multipoint video communication capabilities into their broader-based offerings.
