Shmoop Exposes Students to Norse Myths

  (January 21, 2012)

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) January 21, 2012

Shmoop, a publisher of digital curriculum and test prep, aims to expose students to a wider array of fabled fictional figures by also introducing them to several characters and stories present in Norse mythology. Rather than merely covering the biggies (Loki, Odin and Thor), Shmoop delves a little deeper.

In Shmoops guide, a student can read about the Norse creation myth, discover such Norse gods as Balder, Frey and Freyja, and learn about the theft of Thors hammer. And why all of his problems would have been solved if only hed had renters insurance.

This resource is equal parts educational and entertaining. Instead of a straightforward, dry account of each story, Shmoop snoops the gods, giving a student access to each of their Facebook Walls, transcripts of their therapy sessions, a spotters guide and copies of their police reports. Turns out the god of mischief has quite the rap sheet. Shocker.

By humanizing these non-humans, the stories of their respective plights become that much more engaging, and the anachronistic manner in which their personalities are presented makes them relatable to teens who might otherwise not care all that much about a bunch of imaginary deities.

The multi-faceted, short attention span style of teaching in this guide leaves no room for boredom. By depicting each god from so many different angles, its easy and fun to navigate through this secret world of the Norse gods. And a heck of a lot easier to maneuver than one of those horse-drawn chariots.
