Shake-a-Leg Launches Electronica Collective

Original songs for broacast and film use By DMN Staff Writer
Shake-A-Leg Productions, a boutique music and sound design production company, has launched a new unit, "Porkpie," an electronica music collective. The new sub-division will specialize in the composition and production of original songs for use within television, feature film, and documentary projects. The announcement was made today by Shake-A-Leg Productions co-founders/composers Elyse Schiller and Jim Watson, who are also core members and producers of Porkpie.

In the area of original song writing and scoring, Elyse (also vocals and keyboards) and Jim (drummer, engineer, keyboards) head up Porkpie, which also incorporates the talents of some highly-established musicians, DJ's, and re-mixers. Porkpie features electronic sculptures with sultry vocal stylings, providing soundscapes in an exciting hybrid of lounge, trance, and hip-hop. Emerging from the new "sonic expressionist movement," this electronica style positions itself between the hypnotic climate of "Massive Attack," and the minimalistic twisting of "Kruder & Dorfmeister."

Porkpie's just-released, first CD of original music has met with extraordinary success, with tracks having already been licensed for several television shows, including "Felicity" (Touchstone Television,) and MTV's "Undressed" and "Fanatic Undercover" programs.

In the area of feature films, a Porkpie tune was recently licensed to "Dancing at the Blue Iguana," for Moonstone Entertainment. That movie, which stars Darryl Hannah and Jennifer Tilly, features the Porkpie song entitled "World Keeps Spinning." Other films which have licensed Porkpie music are "Beyond the City Limits" for American World Pictures, and "Fogbound," a sexy, Hitchcockian psychological drama starring Luke Perry.

In addition to licensing already existing music, the Porkpie Music Group has also composed several sections of underscore for the feature documentary film "William Gibson: No Maps for These Territories," produced and directed by Mark Neale. That documentary was recently showcased at Hollywood's Egyptian Theater during the American Cinematheque screenings, and has also been featured at the Vancouver Film Festival, the London Film Festival, and the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. "No Maps" has been licensed by IFC ("Independent Movie Channel") for broadcast television, and will soon become available on DVD as well.

Future plans for the Porkpie Music Group include additional original music scoring for a variety of feature and documentary films.

Founded in l994 by Elyse Schiller and Jim Watson, Shake-A-Leg Productions is a full-service music production company offering a fully-automated, state-of-the-art digital recording and mixing facility. The company has provided fresh, edgy, "hooky" music for the television branding industry since its inception, for clients including E! Entertainment Television, BET, ABC Daytime, Columbia TriStar Television, HBO, NHK/Japan, Nickelodeon Kids (Latin America,) SONY Pictures, TBS, and Touchstone Television, among them.
