Setting Up for DTS Playback on the Mac

A quick technique for previewing DTS content in DVD Studio Pro projects By Dave Nagel
Apple's DVD Studio Pro 3 now includes the ability to import DTS audio into your projects, but there's one problem. With no DTS decoder currently available for the Mac, you can't simply preview your DTS audio within Simulator, so you're stuck building your project before you can even hear your sound. But you don't have to waste your DVD media (and time) burning projects to disc. Rather, with a few little software tricks and the help of a digital receiver, you can play your DTS DVDs right out of your Mac from your hard drive with Apple's built-in DVD Player software.

To begin, make sure you've connected your computer to a DTS 5.1-capable digital receiver. The system should be connected via the Toslink port (optical out) on the back of your Mac. I won't get into the process of setting up your receiver beyond this; refer to your owner's manual for proper configuration. After you have your receiver set up, the rest of the process is all software.

1. Building a disc image
The first step is easy. In DVD Studio Pro, build and format your project, saving it as a disc image on your hard drive. To do this, choose File > Advanced Burn > Build and Format. In the dialog that pops up, go down to the Destination section and set your Output Device to "Hard Drive." Use .img as the Output Format.

This will create a disc image of your project on your hard drive. Double-click it to mount it as if it were a regular disc.
