Sensory Networks Launches Chimera Pattern Matcher

New Software Solution Takes Content Inspection Functionality Beyond Industry-Standard libpcre, With Performance Scaling Over 100Gbps (February 28, 2012)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/28/12 -- Sensory Networks, the leading provider of pattern matching and deep packet inspection (DPI) acceleration software technology, today announced the availability of their new Chimera™ pattern matching software. This library provides 100% support for the regular expression constructs provided by the industry-standard PCRE software library (libpcre) and is capable of matching groups of patterns simultaneously at more than 100Gbps on leading multi-core CPU architectures. Chimera is ideal for applications where a large and varied collection of regular expressions is being used to scan blocks of data at high speed. Applications requiring this type of intensive scanning and inspection functionality include anti-spam, web filtering, email security and many parsing applications associated with Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems.

Chimera takes pattern matching to a new level, incorporating a range of features previously difficult to support in high-performance applications. This includes support for back-references, sub-expression capturing and start-of-match, all of which enable greater content scanning intelligence and control over management of data. Also, new proprietary pre-filtering techniques, as well as innovative scanning algorithms, allow Chimera to deliver scanning throughput that is many orders of magnitude superior to more conventional approaches involving sequential regular expression scans, or pre-filtering techniques that rely on basic string matchers to 'guard' a collection of regular expressions.

"With several customer engagements already underway, including a tier-1, we're very excited to be introducing Chimera to the market," said Sab Gosal, CEO for Sensory Networks. "Chimera augments our highly successful flagship product, HyperScan, and further strengthens our leadership in software pattern matching technology."

"What's unique about Chimera is that it allows us to address the full range of regular expression constructs and use cases," said Geoff Langdale, CTO for Sensory Networks. "Chimera brings together the best of both worlds: the expressiveness and flexibility of a backtracking matcher, coupled with the high performance and scalability expected of a leading-edge matcher."

"While libpcre was a good solution for designers years ago, it has become inadequate given the demand for greater content inspection granularity, overhead efficiencies and faster speeds," said Jeff Wilson, Principal Security Analyst, Infonetics Research. "Chimera offsets the development resources, time and cost that equipment vendors would have to invest in trying to tailor libpcre to their needs."

As with HyperScan, Chimera is a portable software library that can operate on a wide variety of processors and operating systems. Intended for integration into networking and security equipment, its performance, scalability and support for a wide range of applications directly translate into substantial gains in price/performance efficiency, time to market advantage and simplified product operations. The table below summarizes the use case guidelines for Sensory Networks software products.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Use case General Guidelines ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applications Chimera HyperScan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IPS/IDS x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Firewall x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Web content filtering x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email security x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anti-spam x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anti-virus x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UTM x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SIEM x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Application ID x x ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DPI x ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chimera is provided under a simple licensing framework that is considerably more cost-effective compared to alternative solutions. The product has a straightforward, easy to use API and is supplied with a benchmarking tool, documentation, and the necessary technical assistance to ensure a quick and easy integration.

About Sensory Networks

Sensory Networks is a provider of pattern matching and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) acceleration software technology that enables networking and security equipment vendors to significantly improve the content scanning intelligence and performance of their products. The company's products, HyperScan and Chimera, are pattern matching libraries that run on a wide range of processors and operating systems and can be used to accelerate pattern matching tasks in applications that include IPS/IDS, Firewalls, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), Unified Threat Management (UTM), Web/Email Content Filtering, SIEM and Anti-Virus/Spam. Both libraries' performance scales linearly on multi-core systems and, depending on the signatures and system workload, can deliver up to 20Gbps of scanning throughput per CPU core. Sensory Networks is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., and has a R&D center in Sydney, Australia. For more information please visit our website at
