Scalix Implements ActiveSync for Enhanced Mobile User Experience

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Protocol Provides Enhanced Message Synchronization Over Wireless Networks (June 16, 2009)

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 06/16/09 -- Scalix, the award-winning Linux email, group calendaring, and messaging subsidiary of Xandros, Inc., today released Scalix ActiveSync 1.0, implementing Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync Protocol for enhanced message synchronization over wireless networks. The protocol, provided as part of an expanded Microsoft-Xandros messaging protocol license and collaboration agreement, assures superior long-term interoperability with Microsoft and others over comparable reverse-engineered and patent infringing solutions. Also released today is the new Scalix Server 11.4.4, with over 200 improvements and Outlook client support for 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

Scalix ActiveSync 1.0 provides push email as well as wireless calendar and contact synchronization. It supports a huge variety of mobile devices supporting the ActiveSync industry standard including Apple's iPhone, Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices, and Symbian-based phones, such as Nokia's E- and N-Series.

"Of all the solutions we tested, only Scalix met all our needs," said Scalix ActiveSync beta tester Bill Baird, Director of Technology at Phoenix Marketing International. "We looked for an email/calendaring solution that would run on Linux, embrace open standards, have an active online community and offer the following features: Outlook integration including stable offline cache, rich webmail, public folders with mail delivery, and mobile device support. The only missing piece was built-in ActiveSync support -- our Windows Mobile and Symbian users had to use IMAP and manually check for new email or set a scheduled sync. I quickly found during the Scalix ActiveSync beta tests how great it is to have push email for these devices!"

"Today's enterprise users 'on the go' employ a plethora of mobile messaging clients and devices to access a mix of Linux and Windows messaging systems," said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros. "With the implementation of Microsoft's ActiveSync Protocol, Scalix now offers users the same range of connectivity choices on Windows Mobile-based smartphones, iPhones, and other mobile devices that they currently enjoy with Microsoft Exchange. By licensing Microsoft's protocol instead of using a reverse engineered solution, it also means that we are better positioned to provide Scalix customers with compatibility upgrades for future ActiveSync enhancements from Microsoft."
