SanDisk Ships 1 GB SD Card

New process doubles capacity of flash media By Dave Nagel
SanDisk has started shipping a new generation of Secure Digital (SD) cards, a flash storage medium used commonly in digital cameras and consumer electronic devices. The new model offers 1 GB of storage and is available now.

According to SanDisk, the new SD card uses a packaging technology jointly developed with Sharp. The process, called "Three-dimensional system in package" (or "3D-SiP"), allows for two packages to be stacked vertically, doubling the card's capacity without increasing its size. SD cards are currently used in about 1,500 products and offer rights management and other security features. But SanDisk says the process can also be applied to other storage media, such as CompactFlash and Memory Stick. "We expect to use it in future products that require high-capacity flash mass storage," a company representative said in a prepared statement.

The new 1 GB SanDisk SD card is available for $499. For more information, visit
