San Francisco subway shut down after SUV in tunnel

San Francisco subway tunnels closed after SUV drives onto underground tracks, gets stuck By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' San Francisco's subway tunnels are closed after a driver went onto the underground tracks and traveled toward a station.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose says an SUV entered a tunnel on Church Street shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday and drove eastward almost to the Van Ness Station. The vehicle stopped when it got stuck on the tracks.

Rose says police arrested the driver. He says it's unclear why the driver entered the tunnel.

No trains were involved, and no injuries were reported.

All underground train lines have been shut down while crews remove the vehicle and inspect the system. Some damage was done to the tracks, but Rose says train service would be able to resume soon while crews do repairs.

Shuttle bus service has been set up.
