STMicroelectronics Introduces Dedicated Memory for the Digital Display MarketThe SSM1105V provides a complete system memory solution for digital displays using Pixelworks ImageProcessors (December 03, 2001)
The first device, the SSM1105V, is designed for use with PW11x and PWx64 Image Processor ICs from Pixelworks, Inc. SSM1105V devices provide a glue-less interface to the 16-bit x86 microcontroller embedded within the Pixelworks controller. They integrate the main flash program store, an independent secondary flash memory, dual DDC channels, dual I2C ports, a four-channel Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) module, and more, onto a single chip, eliminating several discrete devices. SSM devices save overall system costs by lowering the complexity of the design, reducing PC board space and simplifying manufacturing flow. They also shorten the time-to-market with easy-to-use software tools.
Dual independent flash memories - The SSM1105V features 5 Mbits of main flash memory for storage of application code, the Operating System, bit-maps for Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), and On-Screen Display (OSD) information. The secondary, independent flash memory array of 384 Kbits allows the processor to simultaneously read from one flash memory while writing to the other in-application programming (IAP). It can also be sub-divided, and used to store parametric data as well, eliminating the need for external serial EEPROMs.
More than 3,000 gates of programmable logic - SSM devices also feature over 3,000 gates of general-purpose logic to implement glue-logic, state machines, clock dividers, chip-selects, inverters, or to prioritize interrupts. SSM1105V devices feature up to 52 multi-functional I/O pins to be used for keypad and a variety of control signals. The on-chip logic and I/O eliminate the need for external PALs, PLDs, and 74HCxxx logic, and the configuration is easily rendered using ST's PSDsoft Express software tool, which is downloadable for free at www.st.com/psd.
