SMART Technologies Inc. Granted U.S. Patent for Erasing on an Electronic Writeboard

U.S. patent 6,326,954 is fifth patent issued to SMART in 2001 (January 02, 2002)
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted another patent to SMART Technologies Inc., this one specific to the method for erasing on an electronic writeboard. SMART first introduced the electronic whiteboard in 1991 and has continued to offer software and hardware innovations to each product generation and upgrade. Several more patent grants are anticipated in the United States and around the world.

U.S. Patent No. 6,326,954 is directed to the method for erasing writing on an electronic writeboard. It includes the steps of describing an eraser as a mask and monitoring movement of the eraser over the electronic writeboard. When the mask overlaps with writing on the electronic writeboard, the writing is erased. The shape of the mask is adjusted to compensate for the speed at which the eraser is moved over the electronic writeboard.

SMART now has several patents covering the intellectual property embodied in SMART Board technology, most recently U.S. Patent No. 6,320,597, issued November 20, 2001, which is directed to the steps involved in the editing of objects representing writing on an electronic writeboard. Technology embodied in other SMART products is the subject of additional patent applications now pending in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe.
