SGI Announces New 18.1" Flat Panel Display

New $1495 Flat Panel Display Delivers Dual Input Capability (July 09, 2001)
SGI today announced a new 18.1-inch digital flat panel display, the Silicon Graphics F180. The new display uses In-Plane Switching (AIPS) technology in the LCD, which yields higher brightness, increased contrast and wider color gamut than previously available on comparable LCD displays. This technology enables more accurate image representation and crisper display for advanced graphics applications such as manufacturing, medical imaging, animation and simulation.

Compatible with all current SGI systems, the new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display has 1280x1024 resolution in a 1.3-megapixel format screen. The F180 also features dual input capability with VGA and DVI-I connectors, enabling either analog or digital input for a wide range of video card compatibility and the higher quality performance of a pure digital display.

As the follow-on product to the Silicon Graphics 1600SW flat panel display, the F180 has clear image quality and more screen real estate for applications such as digital video. The DVI-I feature allows users to connect two analog sources and switch between them via the Select button without needing a switch box. This feature is particularly beneficial for advanced users who want to connect two workstations to the same display.

"SGI has improved on an already outstanding product line (the 1600SW all-digital panel) by combining the features of the 1600SW flat panel and new technologies in a larger display that supports both true digital and analog input. SGI's F180 flat panel display continues to provide the sharpest image clarity, the most even backlighting, and the most positive user experience weve found, stated Scott H. A. Clark, author, Peter Nortons New Inside the PC.

?This announcement further demonstrates the commitment SGI makes to technical and creative professionals by delivering the tools for the ultimate visual computing experience, stated Greg Estes, vice president of marketing at SGI. ?The crisp image quality and features of the F180 combined with the processing and graphics power of a Silicon Graphics Octane2 or Silicon Graphics O2 visual workstation enables our customers to use world-class visualization to solve the worlds toughest problems and deliver works of stunning creativity and realism.

The new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display is priced at $1,495 (U.S. list) and will be available at the end of July through authorized SGI solution providers. SGI will feature the new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display in Booth 1401 at the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2001 show in Los Angeles, August 14-16.

Energy Saving Display
The Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display complies with Energy Star guidelines and is highly-energy efficient, particularly when compared to traditional CRTs. In operating mode, the F180 display consumes no more than 75 W, half the power of a typical 21-inch CRT which consumes up to 200 W. Thus, switching from a CRT to the new F180 can result in an energy savings of up to 655 kilowatt-hours per year. In addition, cooling requirements for a flat panel display are less than half that of a CRT. The total energy saved by upgrading from a CRT to the F180 flat panel display can be hundreds of dollars per year per display. For visual computing professionals utilizing multiple displays, the total cost of ownership savings is dramatic.

Pricing and Availability
The Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display will be available at the end of July through authorized SGI solution providers for $1,495 (U.S. list). Compatible with all current SGI workstations, the new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display is offered separately or with current Silicon Graphics O2 visual workstations and Silicon Graphics Octane2 visual workstations. In addition, the F180 is compatible with all Intel processor-based workstations and Macintosh computers.
