RootMetrics Tests Mobile Networks in Tampa, Names Verizon the Top Scoring Carrier(December 06, 2011)
Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) December 06, 2011
RootMetrics, the first independent service to measure mobile experience from a consumers point of view, announced today the results of the Tampa RootScore Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. This comprehensive report analyzes more than 29,000 real-world data, call and text tests and ranks AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Due to the strong results in both data and call categories, Verizon received the highest combined score of 87.7 out of a possible 100. T-Mobile (70.1) ranked second, AT&T (56.4) ranked third, and Sprint (40.5) was last.
The idea behind our RootScore Reports is to help answer questions that consumers are asking every day which carrier has the fastest network? Who has the fewest calls? Which one will send or receive texts the quickest? commented Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. The Tampa report, combined with our detailed coverage maps, allow people to get a true picture of how the different carriers are performing and then make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.
The Fastest and Most Reliable Network in Tampa
To evaluate the Tampa market (defined as the Tampa Urbanized area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau), RootMetrics performed more than 29,000 call, data and text tests during a seven day period, covering all hours of the day and night, from November 11- 17, 2011. The tests were conducted using the RootMetrics RootScout app, running off-the-shelf Android-based smartphones. Tests centered on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.
Data Performance: Verizons LTE network delivered the fastest average and maximum speeds for both downloading and uploading data. Verizons average upload speed was faster than the maximum upload speed recorded by each of the other carriers. Combined with its strong network reliability, Verizon was the leader in the data category.
Verizon recorded average download speeds above 5 Mbps in 81.4 percent of the tests in the Tampa area. Sprint, on the other hand, recorded average download speeds below 1.5 Mbps in 58.2 percent of the tests.
Verizon recorded a data failure in only 2.5 percent of the tests, the lowest failure rate in Tampa. Sprint recorded a data failure in 18.3 percent of the tests, the highest failure rate in Tampa.
Call Performance: All four of the carriers tested delivered statistically equal performances in the Tampa market. Both blocked call and dropped call rates were low for all carriers. Verizon recorded the lowest dropped call rate.
Text Performance: RootMetrics performed a series of tests to determine how long it took to send or receive a text message (SMS) from each of the carriers. T-Mobile continued its strong showing in the texting category and again took first place. When comparing median delivery times, T-Mobile was more than twice as fast as Verizon, the slowest carrier for texting.
T-Mobile recorded the highest percentage of texts delivered within ten seconds. AT&T ranked second for both median text delivery time and for the time it took to deliver a text to a phone within a carriers own network.
Overall: RootMetrics has developed an algorithm that incorporates the results for call, data and text performance measurements into a combined score. In Tampa, due to the strong showing in data and call results on Verizons LTE network, it is the recipient of the RootScore Award Combined for Tampa. The final overall results are:
1) Verizon (87.7)
2) T-Mobile (70.1)
3) AT&T (56.4)
4) Sprint (40.5)
