RootMetrics Report Puts 4G Networks to the Test in Boston, Names Verizon the Top Scoring Carrier

  (June 28, 2011)

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) June 28, 2011

RootMetrics, the first independent service to measure mobile experience from a consumers point of view, announced today the results of the Boston RootScore Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. This comprehensive report ranks Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon on call, data and text performance. Due to the strong results on Verizons LTE network, it received the highest combined score of 86.4 out of a possible 100. T-Mobile (59.8) ranked second. Sprint (49.5) and AT&T (45.8) had a statistical tie for third place.

Each of the major carriers touts 4G coverage in Boston, but our testing reveals that not all 4G technology is the same, said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. People are wondering which carrier is the fastest and which is the most reliable. With all of our testing and reports, were focused on giving people a true idea of how the carriers are performing to let them make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.

Are All 4G Networks in Boston Created Equal?
To evaluate the Boston market (defined as the Boston Urbanized area according to the U.S. Census Bureau), RootMetrics performed thousands of call, data and text tests during a seven day period, covering all hours of the day and night, in June 2011. The tests centered on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.
Data Performance: The top speeds measured by Verizons LTE network, coupled with its strong network reliability led to a Verizon victory in the data category. Verizon delivered the fastest data speeds in the area. RootMetrics recorded average download and upload speeds that were nearly 3 times faster than the second-fastest download network (T-Mobile). During data collection, RootMetrics found that AT&Ts network was the most reliable, successfully connecting to the data network nearly 99 percent of the time. Across all four carriers, the data failure rates measured in Boston are among the lowest RootMetrics has observed in its recent market tests (Seattle, Dallas, Miami, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Atlanta).

Call Performance: In Boston, each carriers performance fell within a close statistical range and therefore no RootScore Award for the Call category was awarded. Dropped call rates in Boston were relatively low compared to other recent markets measured. However, consumers may be up to four times as likely to experience a dropped call on the T-Mobile network than on the Sprint or Verizon networks.
Text Performance: In Boston, median text delivery times amongst the four carriers ranged from 7.1 seconds (T-Mobile) up to 15.3 seconds (AT&T). T-Mobile ranked at the top of most measurements and was awarded the RootScore Award Text for Boston. T-Mobiles network delivered texts to customers within its own network between 3.5 to 16 times faster than other carriers.

Overall: RootMetrics has developed an algorithm that incorporates the results for Call, Data and Text Performance measurements into a combined score. In Boston, due to the strong results on Verizons LTE network, it is the recipient of the RootScore Award Combined for Boston.

The Boston RootScore Report is the eighth in a series of performance measurement reports and corresponding RootScore Awards from RootMetrics. Earlier reports covered Seattle, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Atlanta. The company will continue to publish additional reports on U.S. wireless markets to help consumers make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs. The next report will feature New York.

Consumers who are interested to see how their network coverage measures up can download the free RootMetrics Cell Phone Coverage Map App for iPhone or Android devices.

Mobile performance varies depending on where people live, work or otherwise spend time.

The results of this report combined with the geographical coverage maps at and via the Cell Phone Coverage Map Apps allow people to make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.
