RootMetrics Puts Wireless Carriers to the Test in Kansas City, Results Show Sprint and AT&T Tied as Top Performers

RootMetrics, the first independent service to measure mobile experience from a consumers point of view, announced today the results of the Kansas City RootScore Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. This comprehensive report analyzes results from more than 40,000 real-world data, call and text tests and ranks Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon on their performance. The data reveals which carrier provided the fastest data network (a statistical tie between Sprint and AT&T), shows that all four carriers deliver about equal call performance, and clearly points to the carrier with the fastest text service (T-Mobile). Due to the strong showing in both data and call tests, AT&T (81.3) and Sprint (77.4) share top honors. The results showed a statistical tie for third place between T-Mobile (59.1) and Verizon (55.8).

Including Kansas City, weve tested in 24 markets. In every location, were working to provide consumers with a true picture of the major carriers performance. In Kansas City, similar to other markets, results show that carrier performance varies, said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. RootMetrics Real-world Data Shows Which Carrier Performed Best in Kansas City    
To evaluate the Kansas City area, RootMetrics conducted more than 40,000 call, data and text tests during a seven day period, covering all hours of the day and night, from August 25-31, 2011. The real-world tests were conducted using off-the-shelf Android-based consumer smartphones and centered on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.

Data Performance: The RootMetrics data performance tests analyzed how fast each carriers network was able to download and upload files, and how often a customer could successfully connect to the data network. Sprint recorded the fastest average download, while AT&T recorded the fastest average upload speed. The Kansas City-based carrier delivered download speeds above 5 Mbps in more than 43 percent of RootMetrics tests. Sprints average download and upload speeds in Kansas City are the fastest RootMetrics has recorded for the carrier in any of its testing to date. Kansas City is not a Verizon LTE-enabled market, and Verizons speeds were significantly slower than in cities that do have LTE available for Verizon. Though Verizon recorded the slowest average download speeds, it proved to be the most reliable carrier for transferring data, recording a failure in less than two percent of the RootMetrics test results.

Call Performance: When it comes to call performance in Kansas City, all four carriers delivered statistically equal performances, resulting in a draw.

  • Text Performance: RootMetrics performed a series of tests to determine how long it takes to send or receive a text message (SMS) from each carrier. After winning first place in the text category in every single market RootMetrics has tested during 2011, T-Mobile continued its winning streak in Kansas City. AT&T also had a strong showing in Kansas City, recording one of its fastest median text times RootMetrics has observed to date. Verizon recorded the slowest median text delivery times overall and the second slowest time for delivering a text to a phone within a carriers own network.

Overall: Due to the strong showings in both data and call categories, Sprint and AT&T share the top spot in the combined standings. The final results are:

1 - AT&T (81.3)
1 - Sprint (77.2)
3 - T-Mobile (59.1)
3 - Verizon (55.8)
