RootMetrics Puts 4G Networks to the Test in Philadelphia, Results Show Verizon on Top

  (August 18, 2011)

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) August 18, 2011

RootMetrics, the first independent service to measure mobile experience from a consumers point of view, announced today the results of the Philadelphia RootScore Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. This comprehensive report analyzes results from more than 10,000 data, call and text tests and ranks Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon on their performance. The data reveals which carrier provided the fewest blocked and dropped calls (Verizon), which carrier shows the fastest data speeds (also Verizon) and which one has the fastest text service (T-Mobile hands down). Due to the strong showing in both data and texting, Verizons LTE network received the highest combined score of 88.4 out of a possible 100. T-Mobile (55.4) and AT&T (52.4) had a statistical tie for second place. Sprint (42.7) ranked fourth in Philadelphia.

As we continue our testing in markets across the U.S., were working to provide consumers with a true picture of the major carriers 4G performance. In Philadelphia, similar to other markets, results show that 4G technology is not one size fits all, said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. Our reports empower consumers to make better decisions about the best carrier for their mobile habits.

Which Carrier Flies High in Philadelphia?
To evaluate the Philadelphia area, RootMetrics conducted its call, data and text tests during a seven day period, covering all hours of the day and night, from July 8 - 14, 2011. The tests were conducted using off-the-shelf Android-based consumer smartphones and centered on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.

Data Performance: The RootMetrics data performance tests analyze how fast each carriers network was able to download and upload files, and how often a customer could successfully connect to the data network. As in several previous markets, Verizons LTE network once again earned top honors and was noted the fastest and most reliable data network in Philadelphia. Verizons data network delivered download speeds over 3 times faster than Sprints and AT&Ts and over 5 times faster than T-Mobiles.

And Verizons consistency in delivering download speeds above 10Mbsp stood out from other carriers. At only 1.86 Mbps, T-Mobile recorded the slowest download speeds RootMetrics has observed in the series of market reports to date.

Call Performance: When it comes to call performance in Philadelphia, no single carrier distinguished itself from others, resulting in a draw.

  • Text Performance: RootMetrics performed a series of tests to determine how long it takes to send or receive a text message (SMS) from each carrier. Once again, T-Mobile placed first in text performance and offered the fastest delivery speeds of any carrier. Interestingly, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon were faster when sending texts to a phone on their own respective networks than they were when sending to a different network. In contrast, Sprint was slower when sending texts to a phone on its own network than when sending texts to a different network.

Overall: Due to the strong results on Verizons LTE network for data and text performance, it is the recipient of the RootScore Award Combined for Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia RootScore Report is the 13th report in a series of performance measurement reports and corresponding RootScore Awards from RootMetrics. Earlier reports covered Seattle, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, New York, San Francisco and San Jose. The company will continue to publish additional reports on U.S. wireless markets to help consumers make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs. The next report will feature Denver.

Consumers who are interested to see how their network coverage measures up can download the free RootMetrics Cell Phone Coverage Map App for iPhone or Android devices.

Mobile performance varies depending on where people live, work or otherwise spend time.
The results of this report combined with the geographical coverage maps at http://www.rootmetrics.com and via the Cell Phone Coverage Map Apps allow people to make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.
