RockMelt(R) Re-Imagines Web Browser Around Social With Facebook(R)Two-Way Integration Makes It Easier Than Ever to Stay Connected With Friends (June 14, 2011)
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/14/11 -- RockMelt announced today that it partnered with Facebook to create a truly integrated social Web browser. The new version of RockMelt, available for download beginning today, makes it easier than ever for people to interact and share with friends on Facebook, from anywhere on the Web. The two companies collaborated to create the best possible experience, with Facebook friends and sharing built directly into RockMelt, and a streamlined facebook.com experience.
"RockMelt was founded to re-imagine the browser for the way people use the Web today. Facebook shares our vision for a modern browser and we could not be more excited to collaborate with them to further the browser revolution. The new version of RockMelt we're releasing today is just the start," said Eric Vishria, RockMelt's co-founder and CEO. "There is no doubt that social is the future of the Web, with Facebook at its core. It only makes sense that social should join navigation and search as fundamental capabilities of the browser."
"We're committed to working with startups like RockMelt that are transforming their industries by designing products to be social from day one," said Ethan Beard, director of Platform partnerships for Facebook. "RockMelt's deep integration with Facebook makes it easier for people to take their friends with them around the web, creating more personal and meaningful experiences wherever they go."
The newest version of RockMelt, available for download today from http://www.rockmelt.com, includes over 30 new features, including:
Your Friends - More Awesome Than Ever
Facebook Chat is one of RockMelt's most popular features, especially among those under the age of 35. Nearly 60 percent of these users are active chatters and send an average of 65 chat messages each day. RockMelt has completely re-designed the Friend Edge and added new features to make the chat experience even better:
- Expandable - Expand your Friend Edge to see a full list of friends with names and pictures. This expanded view, complete with a filter box, makes it a cinch to find any friend and manage your favorites.
- Swappable - Pick which side of RockMelt you want your friends on -- left or right. Those that are used to chatting on facebook.com will feel right at home with the App Edge on the left and Friend Edge on the right.
- Scrollable - Now you can use a mouse to scroll through the Friend Edge, whether it's expanded or collapsed, making browsing through your friends even easier.
Never Miss Another Friend Request, Message, or Notification
Since launching in November, one of RockMelt's most common feature requests from its users has been to manage Facebook friend requests, messages, and notifications directly in the browser. These are now built right into RockMelt. As on facebook.com, they are located in the top left corner for quick access.
You can now confirm friend requests and compose and reply to Facebook messages directly within the browser. Notifications let you know when friends post on your Wall, comment on your posts, and do other things of interest to you.
Streamlined facebook.com for RockMelt
RockMelt has always let you bring elements of your Facebook experience with you wherever you go on the Web. Now, for the first time, a custom Facebook experience is available in RockMelt.
Facebook and RockMelt worked together to create a streamlined facebook.com experience for RockMelt users. Now friend requests, messages, notifications and chats will show up directly in RockMelt instead of on facebook.com. And, when you initiate a chat on facebook.com, it will open a RockMelt chat window.
RockMelt's mission is to give people a fundamentally better web experience by re-imagining the browser around how people use the Web today. RockMelt was founded by Eric Vishria and Tim Howes in 2008, and initially launched a limited beta release of the RockMelt browser in November 2010. Today, RockMelt is in public beta with versions for Mac, Windows, and, recently launched, iPhone. RockMelt is based in Mountain View, CA and has raised $10M from industry legends Marc Andreessen, Bill Campbell, Ron Conway, Diane Greene, Ben Horowitz and Josh Kopelman.
