Resolution to seek Syrian rights condemnationEuropeans pressing resolution that would condemn Syrian rights violation and call for halt
UNITED NATIONS (AP) ' Germany, Britain and France are pressing for a U.N. resolution that would strongly condemn Syria's human rights violations and call for an immediate halt to all violence in the country.
The three Eureopean countries decided to move ahead with the General Assembly resolution after the Arab League confirmed its suspension of Syria Wednesday and gave Bashar Assad's government three days to halt the violence against civilians and accept an observer mission or face economic sanctions.
Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig said Wednesday there is strong support for the resolution and the Europeans "hope it will show Assad just how isolated he is."
The Europeans held up pushing the resolution in the assembly rights committee to see if it would get Arab support.
