Report: Utah boy died from gunpowder explosionAutopsy report: Utah boy died from gunpowder blast from miniature cannon, not from projectile
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ' Authorities say a 14-year-old Utah boy who accidentally killed himself with a miniature cannon died after suffering severe head trauma from the powerful blast, not from being hit with a projectile.
Robby Ostberg died Jan. 23 at his home in Tremonton, about 75 miles north of Salt Lake City.
Authorities initially said the boy was playing with a toy cannon.
Tremonton Police Chief David Nance now says the cannon was designed to be fired just like a gun.
Family members had said the boy would shoot tin foil balls with the cannon. But Nance says it wasn't loaded with any projectiles when it killed Ostberg.
Nance says an autopsy shows the boy's injuries were caused by the powerful blast of gunpowder to his face.
No criminal charges are planned.
