Regent University Receives Top Grades In U.S.News' First Ranking Of Online Degree Programs Nationally(January 14, 2012)
Virginia Beach, VA (PRWEB) January 14, 2012
Regent University's online education program received high grades in U.S. News & World Report's annual 2012 rankings of colleges and universities, which this year added Top Online Education Programs.
Regent ranked #8 in Online Bachelor Programs: Student Services and Technology, one of the three categories the magazine used in assessing top online educations programs nationally.
Additionally, Regent placed #18 for its graduate-level Online Education programs in the categories of Faculty Credentials and Training and #19 in Student Engagement and Assessment, as well as #24 for Online Bachelor Programs: Student Engagement and Assessment.
"Since it began offering online courses in 1990 and its first full online degree program in 1998, Regent has been a leader in online curriculum development and delivery," says Regent president, Dr. Carlos Campo. "These new rankings demonstrate what we already know and what our many students know - Regent offers quality online programs, with exceptional faculty and a high degree of student support."
This marks the 27th year that US News, recognized by many as the "gold standard" in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings, has produced its Top Colleges and Universities list, with the inaugural publishing of its Top Online Education Programs.
The online rankings assessed bachelor's degree programs, as well as master's programs in business, engineering, nursing, computer and information technology, and education. To collect data for the rankings, U.S. News sent more than a thousand surveys to schools from its Best Colleges list offering Bachelors and graduate programs.
The magazine used three separate numerical indicator rankings for online bachelor's degree programs: a faculty credentials and training ranking, a student engagement and assessment ranking, and a student services and engagement ranking. According to the magazine, rather than producing an overall ranking based on incomplete and sometimes inconsistently reported information, U.S. News decided to produce three distinct rankings.
Why a separate online "Top" list? According to U.S. News, online learning has come of age. It is fast becoming an integral part of all education, whether for K-12 students, higher education seekers, or adult learners. Online education is innovative and efficient, providing an effective, affordable means of obtaining education.
In fact, online college education is exploding in America. A 2009 Sloan Consortium study of 2,500 colleges and universities found that:
--Over 4.6 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2008 term, a 17 percent increase over the previous year and a 19 percent compound annual growth rate over the last 6 years.
--More than 25 percent of students now take at least one course online
Moreover, the U.S. Department of Education agrees in the benefits of online education. A June 2010 study found that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better than those taking the same course in classrooms.
It is fitting that Regent ranked so high in the U.S. News survey, since the university is a pioneer in online education, especially given that new App technology is taking online learning to the next level. In fact, Regent offers a fully branded mobile app bringing together multiple elements of the campus experience that can be utilized from Blackberry, Android and iPhone units.
Regent's online program offers the same courses as taught by the same on-campus faculty, in both undergraduate and graduate levels. As of the spring 2012 semester, the school has more than 3,100 students enrolled in its online programs, including more than 650 military personnel.
