Red Robot Labs Expands Global Presence in the Gaming IndustryLocation-Based, Mobile Gaming Company Enters the United Kingdom, Acquires Supermono Studio and Welcomes Game Industry Leader Phil Harrison as an Advisor (December 09, 2011)
PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/09/11 -- Red Robot Labs, a location-based mobile gaming company, is announcing its entrance into the UK market as well as several key talent acquisitions. The developments come on the success of its widely downloaded Life Is Crime Android game, currently the top grossing Android location-based game in the United States. In a strategic move to build its games suite, the company will open offices in London that will focus on the expansion of its R2 geo gaming platform. Accompanying the studio growth is the acquisition of the UK-based independent gaming company Supermono and the addition of Phil Harrison, General Partner at London Venture Partners and a former executive at Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) as a company advisor.
Red Robot was formed in January 2011 and released its first game, Life Is Crime, in August at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) West Conference. Show participants were encouraged to participate in location-based missions, committing more than 20,000 in-games crimes and visiting over 2,411 unique venues in the Seattle area in just one day. A month later the company secured $8.5 million in Series A Funding from Benchmark Capital and Shasta Ventures in addition to existing investors Rick Thompson, Co-Founder of Playdom and Chamath Palihapitiya, former Facebook executive. This financing accelerated studio growth, the acquisition of top talent as well as the further development of the R2 location gaming platform.
"With this new venture, Red Robot is continuing to fulfill its vision of creating the most engaging and dynamic location-based games in mobile," said Mike Ouye, CEO and Co-Founder of Red Robot Labs. "Look to Red Robot Labs to keep producing new and exciting titles -- our players will benefit from some of the most creative and compelling gaming talent in the world."
Red Robot's advisory member, Phil Harrison adds: "I'm really impressed with what the team at Red Robot has achieved in less than a year. Life Is Crime has proven their ability to succeed in the mobile game space and the addition of the UK studio gives the company access to even more talent."
In addition to the new location, Red Robot has acquired a subsidiary, the British-based indie gaming company Supermono. While Red Robot will act as parent company, Supermono will retain its functionality as an independent enterprise creating and marketing unique and fun games. Its latest release, Forever Drive, is the number one mobile racing game in more than 50 countries.
"Supermono is a company committed to creating distinctive and beautiful games for the portable gaming world. We continually seek to capture the imagination of people, and our efforts have achieved stand out industry and gamer recognition. Merging with a studio as innovative and energetic as Red Robot will let us continue to be as creative as we can be -- and to keep creating awesome entertainment for everyone!" said Tak Fung, UK General Manager and Technical Director.
