RealSystem Adds Support for MPEG-4(December 10, 2001)
"The largest, most demanding IP network operators count on the 8th generation RealSystem for high volume, mission critical media delivery," said Martin Plaehn, senior vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "These operators can now add support for MPEG-4 formats without sacrificing the performance, fault resilience, systems management, and application integration benefits they enjoy from the RealSystem."
"As the leading provider of high performance, power efficient digital signal processing-based engines for today's wireless handsets, Texas Instruments views MPEG-4 as a core requirement for guaranteeing interoperability between mobile devices and carrier networks. We believe RealNetworks' support of MPEG-4 will contribute to the acceleration of multimedia deployment over wireless networks," said Paul Werp, Worldwide OMAP Marketing Manager of Texas Instruments Wireless Terminals Business Unit.
"The openness and extensibility of the RealSystem has enabled Envivio to offer the market an MPEG-4 systems compliant option that leverages the proven RealSystem infrastructure," said Jonathan Fram, CEO of Envivio. "RealNetworks' announcement today will enable MPEG-4 to achieve widespread adoption immediately. We are excited to offer the RealNetworks user base an MPEG-4, ISMA compliant plug-in to the RealOne(TM) Player for viewing video, audio, and interactive content."
"RealNetworks support of MPEG4 is another milestone in the company's history of pioneering work with streaming media technologies," said Ann Wettersten, vice president, Wireless and Content Delivery, Sun Microsystems. "Sun and RealNetworks close collaboration on scalable, standards based streaming platforms will provide significant benefits to our mutual customers, including content providers, wireless carriers, content delivery networks, and the consumer."
RealSystem iQ is a fully compliant RTP/RTSP delivery system that supports over 50 media types, now including MPEG-4. The MPEG-4 file format and MPEG-4 video are components of the 3GPP specification being adopted by mobile carriers for next-generation mobile services. RealNetworks also announced today that it has gained full voting membership of the 3GPP standards body.
As a member of a wide range of standards organizations including IETF, IPMI, ITU, MPEG Working Group, W3C, and 3GPP, RealNetworks has a deep history of pioneering, contributing, and supporting standards that have catalyzed the industry. In 1996, RealNetworks coauthored RTSP, the international standard for digital media session management and stream control.
About RealSystem iQ
RealSystem iQ is an 8th generation, end-to-end, standards-compliant, OS-independent network media delivery system providing the common architecture for the global delivery of digital media over the Internet -- from any platform, to any device, in multiple media formats, from narrowband audio to high fidelity broadband video. RealSystem iQ operates at multiple levels to reliably stream and download live and on-demand media and eliminate congestion in the "middle of the network". Through distributed network configurations of interconnected RealSystem Servers, RealSystem iQ empowers all servers to broadcast into the network, receive content from other servers, and deliver both live and on-demand media via both streaming and downloading. When combined with RealNetworks' Media Commerce Suite of rights management, access control and encryption, RealSystem iQ makes possible a wide variety of e-commerce services for digital media.
