RealNetworks Launches Track Promo Service

New Real Broadcast Network Service Offers Media Companies Array of Promotion Opportunities (October 12, 2001)
RealNetworks is now providing Track Promo Service, a new service for content owners that offers encoding, packaging, hosting, and rights management reporting of media assets. Built on RealSystem Media Commerce Suite, Track Promo Service is flexible, enabling media companies to save money while generating revenue streams from new business models, such as promotional samples that automatically time-out and entice consumers to purchase content.

Wind-up Records, home to multi-platinum rock band Creed, has announced it will use RBN's new Track Promo Service to distribute a free single from the upcoming Creed album titled Weather exclusively to Internet audiences. Shortly after the general release of the album in late November, the ability to play back the track will be disabled. Starting today, Internet users worldwide can download the free single, "My Sacrifice," from the Creed Web site, located at, or from numerous radio station Web sites.

RBN's new Track Promo Service incorporates the flexible, platform-independent architecture of RealSystem Media Commerce Suite, empowering media companies to develop a range of creative promotion packages that can be changed on the fly, without having the user download the music again. For example, a media company might use Track Promo Service first to allow a user 10 playbacks of a single song, then to change the license to allow the user access to the song until a specific date without requiring the user to download the song again. Track Promo Service provides media companies with an infinite array of promotion packages to distribute to the worldwide audience of over 220 million registered RealPlayer users.

"Track Promo Service was designed to help media companies augment their conventional promotions and distribution channels, track trends in content consumption, and ultimately increase sales of their media assets," said Nagesh Pabbisetty, vice president, Real Broadcast Network, RealNetworks, Inc. "Media companies such as Wind Up Records can now use the Internet to distribute millions of secured promotional copies of their content."
