Rare October snowstorm wreaks havoc in Northeast

Less than 2M still without power after October snowstorm in Northeast; at least 19 dead By The Associated Press

WAYLAND, Mass. (AP) ' The rare October snowstorm that wreaked havoc on many Halloween plans in the Northeast is being blamed for at least 19 deaths, including one in Canada.

At least eight people died in Pennsylvania as a result of the weekend storm. Four people in New Jersey, two people each in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts, and one person in Canada also died in the snowstorm.

Power outages that topped 3 million at the height of the storm were down to less than 2 million Monday night.

Hundreds of schools closed, giving youngsters one of the earliest snow days on record. Many towns have postponed trick-or-treating to later in the week to give utility crews time to clear fallen branches and downed power lines.

One Massachusetts town received 32 inches of snow.
