RIOT Atlanta Collaborates for AICP Show Sponsor Reel

Atlanta, GA - RIOT Atlanta, a full-service creative studio working within the advertising and entertainment industries, created the reception sponsor reel for the Atlanta AICP Show, "The Art & Technique of the American Commercial." Held on October 13 in the city's Woodruff Arts Center, the event opened with RIOT Atlanta's inventive sequence, which introduces each of the event's sponsors and plays off the theme of "light." Displaying beautiful, abstract illumination effects, the video was created entirely by RIOT Atlanta staff, from conception to shoot through to delivery.

"Armed with a Canon Rebel T2i DSLR, we sent nearly everyone from the studio out to shoot imagery focusing primarily on light," recalls managing director Buddy Hall. The RIOT staffers went out on a mission around the city and state to capture any images that demonstrated the theme.

"Everyone came back with beautiful footage!" says VFX supervisor Deron Hoffmeyer, who served as the driving creative force behind the project. Staff mixer Erich Netherton created a percussion track, which was used as the audio for editors Kyle Kramb, Mike Wardner and Scott Salamon to cut to. Video was all transcoded to Apple ProRes 4:2:2 and then edited in Final Cut Studio. All of RIOT Atlanta's staff had some input as the final piece was carefully created and the images juxtaposed in the perfect way to suggest a visual story.

Hoffmeyer created the overall look for the project, which involved slightly burring the company logos and footage to make them "stick together" as if they had been optically printed on a piece of film stock. He then applied the visual glue, adding a color overlay, vignettes, a film grain and dirt to the project using Adobe After Effects. "My intention was to give the material a look as if it had been shot on film and then left on a shelf for 25 years," says Hoffmeyer.

"This year's sponsor reel has a special place in our hearts," says John Phillips, the company's director of business development. "It was a true group effort which brought us together creatively for the pure love of filmmaking which fits right in with the spirit of what AICP is all about."
