R!OT Atlanta Completes Key UpgradesAdds Avid DS Nitris, Smoke 6 for Tezro; Promotes Matt Barron to Editor (July 01, 2004)
R!OT Atlanta has completed a major upgrade to its editorial and compositing systems, adding important new capabilities, improving efficiency and paving the way for more work to be done in HD. Key additions include an Avid DS Nitris non-linear finishing system and two Avid Media Composer Adrenaline non-linear editing systems. R!OT Atlanta has also upgraded one of its compositing workstations to Discreet Flame 8.0 and two others to Discreet Smoke 6 on Tezro, becoming one of the first facilities in the Southeast to offer the new technology.
?We are very excited about the improvements we have made, and we expect that our clients will be too, said R!OT Atlanta Managing Director Britt de Bie. ?The Avid DS Nitris, Media Composer Adrenaline and Discreet/Tezro combination are the most sophisticated technologies of their types, and we are very pleased to offer them to our clients. Their benefits in terms of being able to do more, do it better and do it faster are immediately apparent.
De Bie added that, to support R!OT Atlantas expanded editorial capabilities, the facility has promoted Matt Barron to Avid Editor. ?Matt was ready - many of our clients have been requesting that he cut their spots, she said. ?We have watched his talent bloom and are pleased to support his growth as one of our editors. We look forward to even greater successes from him in the future.
Barron has been on staff at R!OT Atlanta for six years, including the past two years as an Assistant Off-Line Editor. His experience includes work on commercials, broadcast media and long-form programming, including work for TNT, TBS, Toy Box Productions, Chick-fil-A and Discovery Home Channel. Previously, he worked at Peachtree Post in Atlanta as an Editorial Assistant. He began his career with WAGA, the Fox Television affiliate in Atlanta.
?Its wonderful to have the opportunity to work creatively every day, said Barron. ?The projects are always interesting and challenging. Barron will edit on an Avid Media Composer system established in the facilitys new editorial suite.
The Avid DS Nitris system significantly enhances R!OT Atlantas ability to finish commercials, broadcast media, television programming and other media. In addition to its capabilities as a non-linear finishing system, it offers highly advanced features in real-time 2D and 3D digital video effects, color correction and titling. R!OTs Nitris package also includes a remote processing device to speed effects work.
?The Nitris has the tools to take a project from start to finish; its like a TV studio in a box, said Willie Giles, R!OT Atlanta Senior Finishing Editor. He added that the efficiencies of the systems non-linear environment will not only make post sessions proceed faster, they result in better work. ?A project that used to take all day can now be completed in half the time. That allows me to focus more on the creative aspect of the job, continued Giles.
The two new Avid Media Composer Adrenaline systems give R!OT Atlanta a total of four systems for creative, non-linear editing (with a fifth non-linear Avid Xpress system used for digitizing media). The new systems are the latest and top-of-the-line systems from Avid, whose key innovations include the ability to process uncompressed standard-definition video over a single FireWire cable. Like the Avid DS Nitris system, they are capable of processing media at any resolution, including HD in the near future.
To accommodate the expanded editorial facilities, R!OT Atlanta has added an editorial suite, with ample client space. The facility has also upgraded its Avid Unity MediaNetwork shared storage solution to nearly 6 terabytes.
Upgrades made to R!OT Atlantas compositing systems facilitate similar improvements to capabilities and efficiencies. The facilitys two Smoke systems have been upgraded to Discreets Version 6 software and migrated to the new SGI Tezro workstation. The new software adds important functionality, including the ability to composite an infinite number of layers and to employ Apple QuickTime as either an input or output format. The system is also resolution independent.
?The Smoke 6 software is a boon to our clients, said R!OT Senior Finishing Editor/Compositor C. E. Raum. ?We can now work with higher resolution imagery with greater ease. By incorporating that into our clients productions, we are helping them make the transition to mastering and finishing in higher resolutions, including HD.
