Quested Sounds Great In FinlandFried Music Studios in Helsinki installs Quested Q412 monitor speakers (July 16, 2004)
The studios are used mostly for music production for the record industry, as well as some film work and commercials. Producer and co-owner at The Fried Music, Jukka Immonen, explains: ?I started doing some research last year and talking to people outside Finland. I wanted to have an alternative to Genelec monitoring - which is very common here in Finland - as I felt that the music we do would benefit from a different kind of system. This is our first pair of Q412s and honestly I couldnt be happier with them.
?I seem to leave to bottom end much "dirtier" and I dont start cleaning the lower mid and cut out all the warmth of the tracks like I used to. I've always felt that the hip hop and R&B mixes done in the States have sounded way better to me than the European stuff, and I've always tried to put that same fatness and sharpness into my music.
?When I started working with the new system everything just sort of made sense. While listening to some of my old mixes I knew exactly what wasn't right. Like putting a favorite record on and thinking: Damn! This is how they've done it! It was like finding the blueprints for something you've tried to achieve for years.
The rest of the studios system comprises a Protools HD3 system with Control 24 fitted in an Argosy desk, a 12 channel Studer 089 and DW Fearn for preamps, a Manley Vari-Mu and a three band Tube-Tech compressor for main outboard equipment. ?Sound wise the new HD was a big step, he adds. ?Which is why we're also investing in that area. Were trying to have a nice plug in collection and the latest production tools and software.
?The recording space is about 50m2 with a small booth and that will cover the usual sessions. We'll have a separate pre-production studio in the same complex for our own crew, so we will be able to keep the big room running continuously. The idea was to build a comfortable working area for myself and I thought that other producers working in here would be thrilled to get a good new room in the heart of Helsinki.
"One very welcome thing is that my ears dont get tired at all, despite working with higher volume occasionally. And best of all, everybody agrees! People seem to get comfortable with the room in an hour, and Ive already got really good feedback from top producers and engineers here in Finland.
