Automat Pictures, a multi-award winning independent feature film and DVD production company, will present ?Queer for Fear as a special event during ?Outfest LA 2004. The announcement was made today by Jeffrey Schwarz, co-President, Automat Pictures.
The ?Queer for Fear special presentation will explore gay and lesbian subtexts within the horror film genre, and will examine the intertwining of queer history and monster movies. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 13th, at 7:30 PM, at The Village: LA Gay and Lesbian Centers Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 115 N. McCadden Place, Los Angeles (one block east of Highland and one block north of Santa Monica Blvd.) Tickets are $ 10.00 apiece.
Hosted by Harry M. Benshoff, author of Monsters in the Closet: Homosexuality and the Horror Film, this program will explore the role of the ?Monster Queer throughout different eras of film history: the classical Hollywood period, WWII, the Cold War, the 60s and 70s, and the post-modern era.
Mr. Benshoff will provide insightful commentary illustrated by moments from such films as The Bride of Frankenstein, Draculas Daughter, Cat People, Psycho, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunger, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddys Revenge, Fright Night, The Silence of the Lambs, and films by noted gay directors such as The Brotherhood and Hellbent.
Said Mr. Schwarz, ?This unique presentation will show attendees how horror films have betrayed straight societys fears of the outsider, while simultaneously appealing to gay and lesbian audiences identification with ostracized monsters.
