QuarkXPress 5.0 Ships

OS X support coming in future release By Dave Nagel
Quark has started shipping QuarkXPress 5.0, the long-awaited update to its page layout and publishing system. In its first incarnation, version 5.0 will not run natively in Mac OS X, tough it will run in Classic mode on top of OS X (including versions with the USB hardware key). Quark says it is committed to developing for Mac OS X and that future versions will be Carbonized to run in both OS 9 and OS X.

The new release has been designed to function for print and online publishing, including support for PDF, HTML and XML.

QuarkXPress 5.0 includes several new features for print, including layers and tables. QuarkXPress table cells can contain pictures and text with "virtually" all the typographic and image control that you'd find elsewhere in the program, according to Quark. It also has an enhanced print user interface, enhanced PDF support, contextual menus and better color management.

For Web design, it allows users to create Web pages using the same tools that are used for print page layout. It also allows users to insert pull-down menus, rollovers, hyperlinks, image maps and metatags.

QuarkXPress 5.0 is available for Macintosh and Windows for $995. Users of QuarkXPress 4.x can upgrade for $299. The upgrade price for users of QuarkXPress 3.x is $399. We'll bring you more information, including a review of the new software, in the near future. For more information now, visit
