QSC Gets Funky With Tower of Power Tour

(July 11, 2001)
After more than 30 years, 15-plus albums and countless live shows, the classic soul-funk band Tower of Power (ToP) is back supporting their new album Souled Out with a national tour. Supplying the legendary band with quality sound on the road, QSC Audio Products has teamed with McCauley Sound to co-sponsor ToP's latest tour with a dozen QSC PowerLight 236 amplifiers fitted with DSP-3s to power 14 McCauley SM950-2 stage monitors.

Playing venues ranging in size from 1,000 to 25,000 seats, the four-man crew responsible for the band's set up appreciates lightweight amps that cut down on time and truck space, according to Tower of Power Tour and Production Manager Bryan Cross. "Normally we haul four amp racks weighing a 1000 lbs. total, but with the QSC PowerLights and DSP-3s we're down to two lightweight racks weighing less than 400 lbs. total with the same 9,000 watts of power," he says. "They're so much lighter than other conventional amps we've toured with in the past and they deliver all the power we need to rock night after night."

With 11 mixes onstage, one for each musician plus a solo mix stage in the center, the DSP-3s on each PowerLight also make life a lot easier for the band's sound crew. "The DSP-3s allow us to change crossover points, EQ settings and limiter settings simply by plugging a laptop into the DSP-3 and doing a quick reconfigure," says Cross. "Combining QSC's PowerLights with McCauley's SM950-2 monitors and Monarc line array system (FOH) make for a reliable, manageable system. The QSC amps and McCauley monitors work well together to provide enough power to deliver the sound of 10 musicians, while keeping the stage volume at a controllable level."

Cross uses QSC products in numerous settings when working with various sound companies, even when not touring with Tower of Power. "Everyone has QSC amps in their arsenal," says Cross. "But, by far, the new PowerLight 236s are the way to go for monitoring purposes. The consistency of the PowerLights is amazing. Before taking this system out on tour it was a power amplifier de jour-different boxes, amps and boards every night-and anyone will tell you that consistency makes for a great show."

The PowerLight 2 Series amplifiers are a high performance line of power amps designed exclusively for touring and live sound professionals. The 14" deep PL2 amplifiers offer up to 1,850 watts per channel at 2 ohms, up to 1,100 watts per channel at 4 ohms and up to 725 watts per channel at 8 ohms in a 2 RU chassis weighing only 21 lbs.
