Purple Cow Post Marks New Beginning for Idol Chris Daughtry in “It’s Not Over”(January 25, 2007)
DMN Newswire--2007-1-25--After editing more than 300 music videos, New York-based editor Brian Kushner of Purple Cow Post has had the opportunity to work with a number of established artists and rising stars. Kushner’s latest project is a music video for “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry entitled, “It’s Not Over.” While Daughtry’s recent success has proven that an “Idol” contestant doesn’t have to win the top prize to earn a legion of fans, Kushner continues to demonstrate how a strong narrative makes a memorable video.
“For me it’s like getting back to my roots on why I became an editor to begin with,” says Kushner, “(Which) was storytelling—to be able to tell stories in the genre of music video.”
The video depicts the struggles a newly released convict who is reunited with his girlfriend and daughter for the first time in years, and whether or not he can resist the temptations of his old ways as he attempts to build a new life with his family. Jay Martin directed the narrative elements of the video, while Dean Karr directed the performance segments with Daughtry and his band.
Even though Martin was in LA, he had no problem getting RCA to sign off on having Kushner edit the video. Working with RCA music video commissioner Lorin Finkelstein in New York City, Kushner was able to supply rough cuts to Martin via an FTP website, which enabled everyone on both coasts to participate in the creative process.
“We really started off heavy on the narrative and then slowly but surely started adding these performance shots. And it was kind of funny, as we added more performance to the piece, the narrative almost changed. We found Chris becoming a narrator of the story,” says Kushner. “By the time we saw this final cut I was looking at it going, ‘That’s kind of interesting; we kind of made Chris into someone that narrates the story.’ There is a good balance between narrative and performance in the video.”
Capturing the essence of Daughtry’s gritty performance has already received the enthusiastic approval of the artist and his label, and Kushner hopes Daughtry’s fans will feel the same way.
