Its now more likely than ever that students will have their own computer, rather than relying on rooms supplied by the university or college.

A recent survey by UCAS indicated that over 85% of students regularly used their own computer, with less than 5% regularly using those found on campus. It may not come as too much of a surprise, but PCs take the lions share of student computers, with laptops making up the bulk. This makes sense when you consider the likelihood of students moving house, visiting parents and relatives, or even taking laptops into university with them.

There are still a good proportion of students using desktop computers though, while Macs, both laptop and desktop also have a strong presence among the student community.

The current survey suggests that less than 1% of students own a tablet computer. Whether these changes as the devices begin to grow in popularity and accessibility remains to be seen. A tablet computer would seem like a more convenient item to use in lectures and classrooms, rather than lugging around a heavy laptop computer.

One of the most interesting findings of the UCAS survey is that over 43% of students bought (or had bought for them) a new computer before starting university. A remaining 23% were hoping to upgrade or buy a new model at some point during their studies. With so many students owning brand new computers, its important to ensure that adequate insurance is purchased. As students are also incredibly likely to be carrying around laptop and tablet computers around with them, its even more important.
