Propellerhead Releases ReCycle 2.1

Company also launches education package and opens up REX2 file format By Dave Nagel
At the NAMM convention in Anaheim, Calif., Propellerhead Software today announced a new version of ReCycle, an application for preparing drum loops for sequencing. The company has also announced a new education package and says it's opening up the REX2 file format to third-party developers.

ReCycle prepares drum loops by analyzing and slicing them, then creates audio elements and embeds sequencer data into the REX file format, allowing the loop to become tempo-independent. The loops can then be rebuilt and their timing applied to other elements in applications that support the REX file format, such as Emagic Logic, MOTU Digital Performer, Steinberg Cubase and others. The new 2.1 version adds support for Mac OS X and also includes Reason Adapted and Reload. Reason Adapted is a streamlined version of Propellerhead's own Reason, designed for loop composition. It includes Dr. REX, REX2 file player, a mixer, effects, the NN-XT sampler and the Reason Sampler. Reload is a utility for importing Akai samples.

The company has also announced that it's opening up the REX2 sample data format for third-party developers. REX2 is a file format for sampled grooves created by ReCycle for creating tempo-independent loops. Developers previously had to license the file format in order to play back REX files in their applications. It now becomes an open format.

Finally, Propellerhead has also announced an education package called "Teaching with Reason." The company says the package is based on a specially adapted version of Reason for use by high school teachers in class music lessons. It will be available this quarter, but pricing has not yet been announced.

ReCycle 2.1 is available now for Mac OS X as a free upgrade for current users. The full version runs $229. For more information, visit
