Production Designer Michael Giamo Joins Renegade Animation

Animator creates new look for ?Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi? (July 28, 2004)

Animation production designer Michael Giaimo, a veteran of Disney and Warner Bros. Classic Animation and a former faculty member of Cal Arts, has joined Renegade Animation. Giaimo will serve as production designer on Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, the animated television series Renegade is currently producing for Cartoon Network. Giaimos credits include Disneys Pocahontas where he was art director and Foxs FernGully, where he was a character designer.

?Michael is a brilliant production designer, whose sensibilities as an artist are in perfect sync with us and ideal for our show, said Renegade Animation executive producer Ashley Postlewaite. ?He is creating a look that is unlike all other animated series and we are very excited to see it begin to take shape.

After studying animation at Cal Arts, Giaimo began his career in 1978 with Disney where he trained under Eric Larsen, one of Disneys legendary ?nine old men. His first credit came as an in-betweener on The Fox and the Hound. In 1986, he left Disney to work as a freelancer for a number of studios, including Hanna Barbera in series development. During that period, he also taught character design at Cal Arts. Giaimo joined Warner Bros. Classic Animation in 1989 where he did production design on the first contemporary Bugs Bunny cartoon, Box Office Bunny as well as numerous animated television commercials. In 1992, he returned to Disney to work on Pocahontas and left the studio again in 2000 to pursue a career as a fine artist.

Giaimo worked with Renegade founder, director Darrell Van Citters during his first stint at Disney and at Warner Bros. Classic Animation. At Disney, they collaborated on experimental animation used in the development of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. They also worked together on the highly regarded animated short, Fun with Mr. Future. In addition to the aforementioned stint at Warner Bros., Giaimo has also worked with Van Citters on a number of commercial projects for Renegade Animation. ?Mike has always been my production designer of choice for animation, says Van Citters. ?I am absolutely thrilled that Mike was able to join us and utilize his production experience and design sensibility to maximum effect on this show.

Giaimo said that he was delighted to reunite with Van Citters and Renegade Animation on what he termed a ?dream project. ?Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi is the first project on which I have been able to apply all of my design skills, he said. ?I have wanted to have an opportunity to work in television as it is one of the few areas in animation where you can apply a design sensibility. Cartoon Network, in particular, offers fertile ground for that.
