Pro Tools Muscles Up for Post

Digidesign announces biggest-ever post production-oriented release at NAB By Frank Moldstad

Digidesign's Pablo La Rosa holds new surround panner for D-Command console (see page 2).
Digidesigns Pro Tools|HD 7.2 announcement at NAB marks the biggest-ever release of Pro Tools for post production applications. Among the new post-oriented features are a bundled version of Virtual Katys VK Conformer plugin, support for seven different field recorders, and a dubber workflow. Version 7.2 is slated for release in the second half of 2006, and the upgrade will retail for $199.

There are also big improvements in the automation workflow in version 7.2. ?Weve pretty much incorporated every different type of automation thats out there in the market, and then some, said Digidesign marketing communications manager Pablo La Rosa. ?There?s  real time graphic display of the automation on the Pro Tools screen, which is something it didnt used to do -- youd have to look at it later to see what youd done with the faders. Now it just updates as youre doing it.

In addition, Digidesign showed a technology preview of a workflow that will allow  Pro Tools|HD users to work directly with Avid HD picture without rendering effects or creating AAF exports. ?Were showing the ability to run separate CPUs, one dedicated to HD picture and one dedicated to Pro Tools. Theyre synchronized and work together, said La Rosa. There is no shipping date yet, but the two-computer setup promises seamless bi-directional interoperability between Tools|HD and Avid editing systems.

For audio post houses, the bundling of Virtual Katys VK Conformer (a $395 value) in Pro Tools|HD 7.2 (and the new DV Toolkit 2 option) is a significant feature that will save hours of tedious manual labor. The plugin makes it possible to automatically and non-destructively conform audio sessions with a change list EDL or change note. Virtual Katy founder John McKay developed the autoconform workflow while working as a sound editor on Lord of the Rings at WETA Digital, and first introduced Virtual Katy at an AES convention two years ago. Now a Digidesign development partner, McKay was demonstrating both VK Conformer and the full version of the software, called VK2, at Digidesigns NAB booth.

?Theres going to be an upgrade where users can get the full VK2 version if they want to pay for that, with a special deal through Virtual Katy, noted La Rosa.

Full version of Virtual Katy's conform software, VK2 (pictured), is available at a discount.

Those who buy Pro Tools|HD or DV Toolkit 2 will receive a 30-day free tryout of VK2, in addition to VK Conformer for free. The full version adds additional features such as the ability to compare differences between EDLs, Avid Cut Lists, Avid Changes Notes and OMF/AAF files. It also has a VK advisory feature for finding deleted material returning to a cut and VK Batch Processing for comparing/rebalancing multiple reels simultaneously.
