Press watchdog: Release Venezuelan editor

By The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ' A prominent press freedom watchdog group is demanding the immediate release of a jailed newspaper editor who began a hunger strike a week ago to protest what he says is political persecution by allies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Reporters Without Borders condemns the criminal charges filed against editor Leocenis Garcia as part of a broader government strategy aimed at muzzling critics in the media.

Garcia is charged with insulting public officials and instigating hatred as editor of weekly newspaper 6to Poder. He insists he is innocent.

Garcia's sister Maria Lucia says her brother began a hunger strike seven days ago to demand the charges be dropped.

Reporters Without Borders called for Garcia's release on Tuesday.
