Postworks Adds Two Dolby Digital 5.1-Surround Mix RoomsDolby-approved 5.1 suites for broadcast, DVD and film mastering (September 10, 2004)
PostWorks, New York, the east coast's most advanced and comprehensive post production resource, today announced the completion of two new surround mix rooms. Mix 1 is a Dolby- approved 5.1 broadcast and DVD mix suite, and Mix 2 is a Dolby- approved 5.1 film print mastering mix stage. The announcement was made by Joe Caterini, director of audio services for PostWorks, New York.
"After first making tremendous inroads as the surround-sound format of choice for DVD, Dolby Digital 5.1 is now the widely adopted standard for networks offering high-definition television service," explained Caterini, who is up for an Emmy for his work mixing last year's "Russia: Land of the Czars" for The History Channel.
"To give our mixers and our clients the greatest options in the realm of 5.1 mixing, our chief audio engineer Brian Dorfman gathered the latest input on acoustic design and equipment specs from Dolby Labs' engineers and then designed our two new rooms from the ground up."
"Since trying to retrofit an older room to Dolby's stringent specs can be a nightmare, we decided to design brand new 5.1 surround mix rooms with proper acoustics and monitoring," Dorfman said. "From a pure design level and from an equipment level, the acoustic needs of a great-sounding 5.1 surround mix room are far more demanding than old-fashioned stereo mix rooms. Our new rooms will let our clients access the world of 5.1 surround mixing at the highest level."
Maximizing Digidesign's Grammy Award-winning Pro Tools technology, the new rooms will be home to mixers Matt Foglia and Benny Mouthon. Emmy-nominee Foglia has extensive national broadcast and 5.1 surround mixing experience on projects for Comedy Central, MTV, Sundance Channel and VH1, among many others. Over the past year, he also mixed concert specials for Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Phish which aired nationally on CBS, A&E and PBS. Foglia also engineered full 5.1 surround mixes for each special's DVD release.
Benny Mouthon has worked on a wide range of broadcast and feature projects in New York over the past ten years. A two-time sound mixing Emmy-nominee for his documentary broadcast work, in the past two years he has mixed nearly 100 hours of programming for broadcast outlets including A&E, The Discovery Channel, MTV, NBC, Outdoor Life Network, PBS, TLC and VH1. He has also mixed numerous feature-length documentary and narrative films, including last year's Berlin Film Festival favorite "Ballad Of Sexual Dependency."
