PostWorks Delivers Two 2005 Academy Award NomineesDocumentary Filmmakers Leverage PostWorks? Advanced DI Capabilities
PostWorks, New York, the east coast's most advanced and comprehensive post production resource, today announced that two of the five feature documentary films nominated for this years Academy Awards relied upon the company for critical post- production support.
In working with this years nominees Ross Kauffman and Zana Briskis Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids and Lauren Lazins Tupac: Resurrection PostWorks continues to expand its leading role in delivering Oscar-caliber documentaries. The company also made significant contributions to four 2004 Oscar nominees, including My Architect, Capturing the Friedmans, Asylum and Errol Morris Academy Award winning documentary, The Fog of War.
Both Born Into Brothels and Tupac faced the challenges of mastering multiformat sources, all shot under a wide variety of lighting conditions, to create a visually seamless end product. Original film footage was combined with a variety of 30fps analogue archival footage ranging from VHS to ¾ to Beta SP for Tupac, and Born Into Brothels also integrated multiple formats and frame rates, plus numerous stills. PostWorks addressed these technical challenges using Avids DS Nitris and Quantels iQ both multistream 10-bit High-Definition (HD) mastering tools.
To achieve continuity through color-correction, Brothels was colored by PostWorks team in standard definition using Avids Symphony, while director Lauren Lazin worked in HD using the da Vinci 2K color enhancement system for Tupac. Film end products were ultimately created for both documentaries to meet Academy eligibility requirements.
Other high-profile feature documentaries that have recently relied upon PostWorks for what company president Billy Baldwin refers to as ?technical mastering creating 24P HD Digital Intermediates (DIs) for non-film based, multiformat-sourced projects include the 2005 Sundance Film Festival American Documentary Grand Jury Prize-winner Why We Fight, and the 2005 Sundance American Documentary Audience Award-winner Murderball.

?The one group who has benefited the most from using 24P HD intermediates for mastering purposes is documentary filmmakers, Baldwin said. ?For those projects that begin with digital, non- film based materials, technical mastering to 24P HD is proving to be a very rewarding finishing approach. Technical mastering makes for a very convenient and accessible DI format for projects like these, offering the closest representation to your final filmed end-product.
Although the work on Born Into Brothels and Tupac occurred in 2003, before PostWorks opened its sophisticated new 34-seat DI Theater, Why We Fight and Murderball both benefited from the new offering. ?We know that everything looks good on an HD monitor, but now that digital projection technologies have surpassed the color and contrast ratios of film, the digital projector can support critical decisions based on projected images. As a result, all of our clients are getting even more benefits from these great post-production advances? specifically, more visually extraordinary HD and film-based end products.
